They Popped This One Up

I was so anticipating these four reissues of Peter Gabriel's first four albums. And with the hype on the video from one of the mastering engineers, I was hoping what he was espousing would be true. The best sounding yet? Had he heard the Classic Records 45rpm masters, or even the 33s? I don't have any of the Classic Records 45s, but the 33s I have are pretty great, and they're ALL analog.
The reissues were digitally remastered and, well, they sound it. Two things are striking about these initially. One is how large the images are. Very impressive. And there is a certain clarity that these attain with softer material.
But there is a leanness and silvery quality to the tonality compared to the Classics or even original UK pressings. And when dynamics get pushed here, things get harsh. Transients are quick, but there's a serious lack of lower end bloom. Overall, these are just not satisfying. Real World missed the boat, popped one up -- take your pick of analogies.
