Posted Thursday, December 7, 2023 by Anonymous I have never had a first press of this record. My only copy is the Blue Note Classic which I love and have played often over the last couple of years. As good and AAA as the Blue note classic is, this One Step is better to my ear. Warm and engaging. Better bass definition. Nice sizzle on the top end. The piano is also more defined and all the instruments have a little more space. I purchased because I am a completist and it’s one of my favorite albums. Very happy with the purchase!!

The side 3/4 disc is only good for filling the trash can. I can't believe they have the balls to package this crap and sell it to the public.

Great performance but intimate not rushed nor reaching. Now to the recording- this copy is audiophile caliber. Quiet vinyl and clear sound. This vinyl sounded like a top quality high priced recording. All the way around I was pleasantly surprised.

I am a Mingus freak and this is the best sounding version of this album by far. The somewhat extreme right-left instruments separation is very typical of this era and is consistent with the original pressing. All the musicians sound so close to you. Especially Mingus' upright. An astonishing pressing overall. It was worth the big investment (60 bucks plus another 60 bucks for the shipping).

Along with the 33rpm Acoustic Sounds Verve stereo, this UHQR 45rpm stereo has earned it's place as the edition I'll reach for during focused, immersive listening sessions. The air that surrounds the group, the wide soundstage, the detailed separation of players - all in service of the music. Yes, you will have to get up and flip this record. But yes, it's worth it. The pressing was centered, quiet, flat, well done. The booklet inside the box is also beautifully done - liner notes, pictures of John & Alice, their home, and of John's handwritten poetry which became the poem on the original gatefold. This will be my keeper copy!

Of course there are reissues or original available on Discogs, but actually I prefer new (reissues).

That said I was so excited Analogue Productions announced they are releasing a lot of Prestige records now and in the nearby future.

Regarding this release, I can only say very well done. You know it’s not only fantastic sounding, it even brings the feeling back you want to experience listing to this sort of music.

And besides that the price for those reinsure is nice as well. So highly recommend.

Posted Monday, July 3, 2023 by Mark When this series was announced, I decided I was not going to pay $70 for Optimal pressings . it wouldn't matter what they were. Then, this and other titles in the series became available at sale prices so I took a punt. If I had known what this album contained I would have happily paid full price on release day. I have studio albums by Vaughan, they are nice, but I now realise they are safe and controlled productions with care taken as though Vaughan is conscious that she is creating her legacy. In this live setting, and to a jazz festival audience, Vaughan is unrestrained and risk-taking. I had no idea who Sarah Vaughan really was or what she was capable of, until I heard this record.

Posted Wednesday, June 28, 2023 by Anonymous Purists say that Billie Holiday at this time in her career lost her voice and did not have the range required to be at the height of Ella. But as Norman Granz pointed out, Billie does not sing rather tells her songs. This is a beautiful album composed of 6 extended songs, which makes it more interesting because in addition to Bilie'svoice there is plenty of room for great solos of Trumpet, Guitar, Piano and Saxophone. It is a very easy album to listen, and it will appeal to people who want to get into Jazz. Regardless to say that Acoustic Sounds made a great job. I just wish Mr. Kassem decided to release the Last Recording LP on his label, another great album but with an orchestra behind her. On another note, if someone wants to understand Billie's life, I would recommend the documentary called "Billie." released in 2019. Then you will truly understand Billie.

From the engineers, to the editing team, the mastering, the lacker cut, the pressing, the cover, the label ! This is just a wonderful edition. Thanks to Craft and people at Acoustic Sounds and the QRP team. And once more admiration for the "out of this world" Bernie Grundman and Chad Kassem. Thanks to Leroy Vinnegar and his band for the music. This is really, really wonderful "feel good" music, and what a bass ! It can't get any better....

Posted Wednesday, June 14, 2023 by MSJ Im a huge fan of this album. Sun Ra's blend of avant garde with classic big band is a delight, and on full display here. I've worn out a few CDs and cassettes of this record in various cars, and on this re-issue, all kinds of things are more present than on either of the previous versions. Its a bit noisy, and has lots of interstitial noise between tracks, but you know what, it all really fits this record. If you just sit and enjoy the complex weaving of melodies, counter melodies, and piano parts.. you cant get enough. Do recommend if you're a fan of this record. It sure beats some releases on previous mediums.

Something Old, Something Gnu

Posted Monday, June 5, 2023 by Dave A. Wow. ECM really kicked off their new series well with this set from 1975. The pressing is so clean - not a pop nor a tic. The sound has great instrument separation and a three dimensionality. It's a gas to hear these four legends bouncing off each others ideas, carrying on a exploratory musical dialogue. The packaging is uniquely first rate - the vinyl is not packed inside the sleeve, but rather in the center of the gatefold. I've gotten plenty of used lps this way but this is a first for a new record from the factory. I like it! I'm hoping this sets a trend. I will definitely be keeping my ear tuned to this series.
