...not enough stars...

Posted Saturday, December 3, 2011 by Bob Muir ....I used to follow John back in the 70's around Rochester in all the right dives....for the price of a beer you could see him free at the Cottage Hotel in Mendon, N.Y., 10 min. south of Rochester. This is an amazing recording. I still have an effort of his on Blind Pig Records, "Coming Your Way"...this recording process makes everything else sound like an 8 track in a Ford Galaxy....buy it and don't look back.

Another Steller Release

Posted Saturday, August 27, 2011 by audiofan The sonics are the same as on its predecessor (see "Getting Ready"), but I favor (slightly) the song selection on "Texas Cannonball"- the intensity is still there, but by the time he cut this second album (for Leon Russell's Shelter label) King just seems to feel more "at home" and relaxed. The music, however, burns brightly, and QPR's pressing reveals the sound to be as complex, beautiful, and involving as the surreal cover shot.

Killer King

5 Stars
Posted Saturday, August 20, 2011 by audiofan This classic blues album has never sounded this alive, warm, articulate, and inviting. QRP has done lovers of the blues - indeed, all of us who love music with real soul and feeling, a tremendous service with this title and its follow-up, "Texas Cannonball". Both could almost bring the dead back to life, such is the passion, feeling, and love of life imbedded in these dead-silent grooves. For the age of the recordings, these re-issues are state-of-the-art examples of how to press first-rate vinyl - one just can't realistically ask for more. Two words: Buy. Now.

One of the best Blues albums... period.

5 Stars
Posted Wednesday, December 22, 2010 by Joe Jacobs I find I keep going back to this one over and over every few months and it never wears out when it comes to being solidly entertaining.

Here is a case where HDCD really shows off. When you put a little energy in the speakers, it's like Mr. Spann is right there in your living room. When he pounds his foot on the floor keeping time, you feel it. Man, is it realistic! And that's the idea in better quality audio reproduction, isn't it? To FEEL the artist in a more personal way than just simply hearing the music?

This disc delivers that experience like very few I own. Performance and sonics both rate 5 Stars minimum.

The style of the music is that smooth, Bluesy, rhythmic driving beat that can be the feature instrument or drive a band along with it. When you listen to Muddy Waters on an electric guitar, it's pretty easy to understand why he liked Otis Spann as his piano player.

Throw this one on, turn it up and I'm betting that you'll like Mr. Spann as your piano player,too...

Posted Tuesday, October 19, 2010 by Scott While the audio might be a little less pristine than other MFSL releases because some of this material is over 50 years old the performances are well worth the price!

MAGIC!

5 Stars
Posted Monday, August 9, 2010 by Miller W Steel The music on this LP is just the best, this young man was 16 when this was recorded? I am so blown away, and then we are talking about the acoustics in that church in Kansas that Chad has converted to a performance and recording venue, it is grand. This disk plays perfectly, and the sound, the energy of the venue just charges my sound room when I play this LP. I have blown multiple gatherings away with this LP, no one ever buys it when I tell them Mr. Knox is 16 years old, then I pass around the LP cover and you should see the faces... It is great fun! Great LP, Great performance.

HOODOO MAN BLUES

5 Stars
Posted Thursday, February 4, 2010 by Dennis North Hoodoo Man Blues is the 1965 debut album of blues vocalist and harmonica player Junior Wells, performing with the Junior Wells' Chicago Blues Band, an early collaboration with Grammy Award-winning artist Buddy Guy.

Without question, the original release in 1965 is one of the best blues LPs of all time. The quality of this 45 RPM release by Analogue Productions far surpasses the original release and any subsequent releases. On a 1-10 scale I grade the sound as 10; music as 10; vinyl quality as 10; press quality as 10; and sleeve quality as 7. The sleeve quality is the only weakness I could find! The overall quality (my opinion) is an astonishing 9.4! Yes, $50 is a lot of money for and LP, but a guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Outstanding sonic value

5 Stars
Posted Saturday, January 16, 2010 by Anonymous This is one outstanding SACD to listen to. Not only are ALL of the selections extremely enjoyable (I am not a big blues fan) but the recording is among the best that I have heard (I have 100+ SACDs). Buy this SACD and your music system (whatever the value) will truly shine.
