Miles Davis - Sketches Of Spain

 (Numbered Limited Edition)

Numbered, limited edition Hybrid Stereo SACD

After hearing a classical version of Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjeuz," Miles Davis and British arranger Gil Evans decided to use it as the centerpiece to make their new album around. With its emphasis on flamenco, rich orchestration and relaxed tempos Sketches of Spain is undoubtedly one of the smoothest and most accessible albums of Davis' brilliant career.

2. Will O' The Wisp
3. The Pan Piper
4. Saeta
5. Solea

Large Sounstage

This review is not of the music, which is perfect, but of the sonic qualities of the SACD.

I have the record of this, also by Mofi, and on the SACD you can hear details that you cannot hear on the record (but they are very minute). This SACD is like the record, but without surface noise, and with added gain.

The sound is very vivid and can be jarring at times. Davis' horn can be piercingly potent. The soundstage is huge and 3-dimensional. In the 4th tune, there are sounds that pan left-right, and then come back around again, where the whole thing forms a 3D circle in space. There is musical fill from left-right as Davis occupied the center, with an orchestra split on both sides of him. All of the instruments sound correct.

A stunning collaboration between master arranger Gil Evans and Miles Davis, plus some of his band and other outstanding jazz players. Davis' playing is unsurpassed in its creativity, tone, and subtlety of phrasing. All rendered in outstanding sound that captures the emotional impact and wide range of colors and rhythm of the music.
