A rare hard-bop set from NEA jazz master and 14-time Grammy nominee Toshiko Akiyoshi
Recorded with saxophonist Charlie Mariano
Remastered from the original analog tapes by Bernie Grundman
Released to widespread acclaim in 1961, the Toshiko Mariano Quartet album found the Japanese-American jazz master in full form as a pianist, bandleader, and composer, leading a band that included her then-husband, Charlie Mariano, himself a force as a solo artist and sideman to Mingus, Quincy Jones, and other great bandleaders.
Upon its release, Time Magazine called Toshiko Mariano Quartet as one of the year's best jazz outings and praised her as a "pianist of extraordinary fire and fluency." In the years since, her reputation and acclaim continued to grow into a career that has earned over a dozen Grammy nominations, recognition as an NEA Jazz Master, and be voted Best Arranger & Composer in the prestigious Down Beat Reader's Poll-the first woman ever to win the award. Candid is proud to bring one of her finest recordings back in print on 180-gram vinyl, sounding better than it ever has.
