Category: 180 Gram Vinyl Record
Label: Decca (Pro-Ject Audio)

Beautiful performance

4 Stars
Posted Wednesday, April 9, 2025 by Glenn The performance of these great symphonies is exceptional. I was a bit disappointed by the quality of the pressing -hence the 4 stars. It's good, but not as good as the Analogue Productions and UHQR pressings that I've been buying lately. I guess I'm spoiled.

Excellent Recording

Posted Thursday, April 4, 2024 by Mike I have the previous DG cutting of this album. It is a very good audiophile grade recording. I am a huge Hahn fan. This one is a must have. Highly recommended.

Michael Stern - Saint-Saens: Symphony No. 3 'Organ' Product No: AREF 1514

Posted Saturday, September 30, 2023 by Anonymous Very good fidelity, quiet surface, and and moving performance. My SVS sub shakes the room with the pedal notes; didn't know vinyl had such low, powerful frequencies! Highly recommended if you like this music. One needs a good low frequency system to appreciate the power of this performance. Otherwise, just a good, clean, orchestration and balanced organ. Again, recommended!

Sir George Solti - Die Walkure Product No: ADEC 98601

Fantastic

5 Stars
Posted Friday, January 13, 2023 by Jim W I will confine my comments to the sound. I have both vintage 60 year + discs as well as new pressings and new reissues. This recording is noticeably superior in all aspects than any other in my collection (except other releases in this ring series). The vocals are even clearer than when I last listened to a live performance of this opera at the NY Met. BUT, at least the first side of disc one was full of cereal noise until I put it through my vacuum cleaner after which there was but one soft click. I am very glad I jumped on the preorder early.

John Eliot Gardiner - Bach: St. Matthew Passion Product No: ADGR 4838452

Category: 180 Gram Vinyl Record

poorly engineered

3 Stars
Posted Friday, August 12, 2022 by Anonymous The album could've been a wonderful reproduction of a great performance, and the voices are very clear; however, the engineers botched this one by placing the grooves too close together, consequently there is a post-echo in every track of a recitative (in the left channel, with the post echo in the right channel), which is very audible and very disturbing. The post-echo also shows up every time the first chorus (in the left channel) sings.

Leibowitz, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - Moussorgsky: The Power Of The Orchestra Product No: AAPC 2659

Category: 180 Gram Vinyl Record
Label: Analogue Productions (RCA Living Stereo)

Worth the wait for the repress!!

5 Stars
Posted Saturday, July 9, 2022 by A. Wint A truly worthwhile audiophile classic and great performances of these Classical favorites. Analogue Productions is at the top of their game...the pressing is almost mastertape quiet and flat! The quality of presentation is on par with Impex and Intervention. Keep 'em coming. Pick this up before it goes out of stock again!

Posted Monday, January 31, 2022 by Anonymous Was nervous buying all these re-releases of Mercury living presence titles for the price… but… sounds amazing!!! What a great release. Guess it shows when people put the work in the results pay off to a timeless collectors version.

such promise, until the needle hits the groove

1 Stars
Posted Thursday, August 19, 2021 by scott baxter I had such hopes, but this is a very noisy record. Far too many pops and audible grit throughout both disks. I always wash a brand new record, and re-washing made no difference. The record was put through a degritter cleaner and it made no difference. I bought a second lp set and it sounded just the same. This is wasted money. I have a near 40 year old Antal Dorati/London Symphony recording by London Digital and it is so much more quiet.

Apart from the abysmal surface, this 'read' of the score is rather more relaxed than I think it should be, but we're now talking about matters of taste. Overall, it's too languid, lacking attack on certain passages that should literally shock the listener. Both the Bernstein and Dorati led recordings do a better job in this respect.

Overall I'd say this is a very problematic recording that had superb potential, but that is squandered by the rash of artifacts scattered across the surface of both disks.

Fine vinyl and nice interpretations

5 Stars
Posted Sunday, March 7, 2021 by O.D. Jones I have had some trepidation in ordering a recent DG record due to the Carlos Kleiber Beethoven 5th reissue being dirty and noisy right out of the sleeve. I can report that both records here are heavy and flat and, even before a wet vacuum cleaning, are quiet and perfectly fine. I have no idea who pressed the Kleiber reissue, but this current crop of DG vinyl is good quality. The sonics of this recording are open and atmospheric, and the performances worth delving into. One interesting note is the fact this pianist included performances of two pieces, the Busoni transcriptions, that the tragically short-lived Dinu Lipatti recorded in supernatural and sublime fashion in the early fifties. The Lipatti records are worth searching out as I don't think they've ever been out of print since they were first released, along with an astonishing Ravel piece recorded in I believe 1936 on shellac. This Vikingur Olafsson record is highly recommended and I would like to hear his Glass LP next.

Leonard Bernstein - Ode an die Freiheit/Ode to freedom - Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125 Product No: ADGR 4837443

Very poor audio quality

2 Stars
Posted Monday, January 11, 2021 by Mark The performance is wonderful, however, this digital pressing does not even rank on the James A. Mitchell audio stereo fidelity scale. The quality is muddy and muffled. I was sorely disappointed

Jean Martinon - Borodin: Symphony No. 2/Rimsky-Korsakov: Capriccio Espagnole Product No: AAPC 2298

Excellent Borodin and Korsakoff.

Posted Tuesday, July 28, 2020 by Anthony Interpretations are excellent with Jean Martinon leading LSO. I especially loved Rimsky Korsakoff's Capriccio Espagnole. The recording is excellent and very quiet. Definitely worth purchasing.

Wow

Posted Saturday, April 25, 2020 by Anonymous This is a heroic performance from Heifetz, it may be somewhat overlooked because of the repertoire but the sound and performance are every bit as impressive as his Sibelius or Brahms concerto.

Rubinstein and Szeryng - Beethoven: Sonatas No. 8, Op. 30, No. 3 / Brahms: No. 1, Op. 78 Product No: AAPC 2620

Category: 200 Gram Vinyl Record
Label: Analogue Productions (RCA Living Stereo)

A very fine record.

Posted Thursday, March 26, 2020 by Anonymous Beautifully played Beethoven and Brahms chamber works. This is a very immediate (and intimate) sounding recording.

The LP has a very quiet surface (par for the course for Quality Record Pressings and Analogue Productions).

Viktoria Mullova - Mendelssohn: Violin Concertos/ Sir Neville Mariner Product No: APHI 43136
Available: BackOrdered
Category: 180 Gram Vinyl Record
Label: Analogphonic (Philips)

Wonderful Mullova recording

5 Stars
Posted Wednesday, February 26, 2020 by EricL This is the first release on vinyl of this recording of Mendelssohn's two violin concerts. Mullova recorded these with Sir Neville Marriner in 1990 in London. Though the recording is digital, it has plenty of warmth. If fact, it's one of the best sounding recordings of these works that I possess. Mullova's violin sound, very prominent , but not overbearing, is wonderfully wrought. So too is the sound of the orchestra. Though the highlight here is obviously the E minor concerto which Mullova skillfully executes, so too, is the D Minor Concerto enjoyable, one written by the composer at age 13! And the sound here is even more involving with Mullova slightly left of center and the lower strings on the right playing their hearts out.

The German pressing is flat, centered and perfectly quiet. When I listened to this recording late last night, I marveled that there were times like this that vinyl can sound so entrancing, so lovely and so believable

Ida Haendel and Sir Adrian Boult - Elgar: Violin Concerto Product No: AEMI 3598
Available: BackOrdered
Category: 180 Gram Vinyl Record
Label: EMI Testament

Fantastic performance and excellent (for EMI) sound

5 Stars
Posted Friday, November 15, 2019 by Jonathan This is my favourite performance of the Elgar Concerto. Whereas most performers (including modern ones) want to ram this concerto down your throat in the quickest possible time, this performance is far more measured and introspective. Haendel has the ability to express her musical ideas so as to reinforce the composer's intent rather than indulge in fancy self-indulgent showmanship and the histrionics typical of the modern generation. Her actual sound is very easy on the ear as well - something I cannot say for most modern players. The sound on this disc is top-drawer late analogue era EMI. Meaning not up to Decca standards but still very good and very listenable - with perhaps just some typical late-EMI era analogue bloom and a lack of inner detail in relative terms. The violinist is admirably well balanced relative to the orchestra (again, meaning not overblown). My particular disc bought from Acoustic Sounds was flawless.
