The Best Version of a Masterpiece

5 Stars
Posted Tuesday, April 2, 2024 by Paul After already owning 2 copies of this I was a little hesitant but it was absolutely worth spending the cash on this version. The sound is fantastic and beats the other two copies without any doubt.

This is listening to the tape machine in the studio good and works well at 45rpm with the title track being over 13 mins long and having a track per side. The gatefold jacket is too notch and printing is 10/10

When you have to have the definitive version....

5 Stars
Posted Monday, March 11, 2024 by William Taylor Just received my double 45 today, and am very pleased. Some albums justify the expense, and for me, this is one of them. Trane is powerful and clear and Paul Chambers' bass is warm and strong--just what I was looking for. Surface noise is limited. Another winner from Acoustic Sounds.

Charles Mingus - Blues & Roots Product No: AAPA 001-45

Most likely the best pressing ever

5 Stars
Posted Wednesday, October 11, 2023 by Fumio I wanted to give this new Atlantic 75 releases a try and without hesitation I purchased this first available item. I am a Mingus freak and this is the best sounding version of this album by far. The somewhat extreme right-left instruments separation is very typical of this era and is consistent with the original pressing. All the musicians sound so close to you. Especially Mingus' upright. An astonishing pressing overall. It was worth the big investment (60 bucks plus another 60 bucks for the shipping).

Lady Day Comes to Life

5 Stars
Posted Friday, January 13, 2023 by Shawn Howard Just now Lady Day came to life in my listening room, with a spotlight on her only, singing into a microphone on an elevated round stage. The conductor, Ray Ellis is just behind her right shoulder, delicately conducting the orchestra and choir. The drum kit is slightly behind and to her left, the upright bass almost even with her, on the fringes of the light, to her left and to our right. A tear crept up and paused at the edge of my. My heart pounded slowly, and I swayed to the music. As I moved, I realized Billie Holiday was holographically there with me. Each slightly different angle revealed a different side of her voice, and in my mind, her entire presence.

What a way to start a new year of record enjoyment. Thank you to everyone involved. Bravo, and may we have an encore please?

Of course it sounds incredible, but disappointed

Posted Saturday, March 19, 2022 by Johnnymics I haven’t been personally failed by any pressing from Acoustic Sounds and QRP. They’re the best in the country and top 1% in the world. This album is no exception. Sounds incredible. Distinct, wide, and alive. My issue is the album is missing a couple of tracks, specifically Cocktails For Two. Love that song and wish it was here.

IT'S A SHOW STEALER, LADIES AND GENTLEBEN

5 Stars
Posted Thursday, April 8, 2021 by S. Madon Gentle Ben serves up some of his most deeply felt blues and ballads, very gently supported by the Tete Montoliu (great pianist) Trio. Recorded in Barcelona in Nov 1972, just 10 months before Ben's death. This is simply a beautiful record. Listen to the two numbers by Gershwin that Ben plays with a heart as big as his breathy style on the reeds. Freaking choked me up in parts, I must say. His playing on the tenor sax was so expressive on Gershwin's "How Long Has This Been Going On" that I swear I could hear him singing the words to that song. And so I repeat that old cliche, "They don't make players like this anymore!" Ben was greatly respected amongst his peers and like many such artists in the mid- 60s moved to Denmark where he developed a huge following and played at the amazing Montmarte club, often with Tete's trio. Tete's amazing piano work is prominently featured here too. Treat yourself to a gentle evening with this Gentle Ben.

QRP, you have outdone yourselves

5 Stars
Posted Saturday, December 5, 2020 by CJB Pardon me if I gush. Just received this. Lets get the technical side out of the way. The first disc is dead flat. The second is 98% flat, which is statistically insignificant. The pressing is the epitome of pristine. I have all three pressings of this; the mono and stereo 33, and now the 45. I believe this production will show off what your system can do. The width and depth of the soundstage, especially the depth, is magnificent. The detail, timbre, and dynamics; awesome. The vocals of Allen and Holiday; simply wonderful. Jo Jones drum breaks in Blues; like you are in the same room. As a drummer, my jaw dropped. If you dig this music, get this! I'll leave this where I began. QRP, you have outdone yourselves.

Nice with too much bass

3 Stars
Posted Thursday, July 12, 2018 by Chris No offense to Red Mitchell but to me this album would have been so much better with just the quitar. It took away the intimacy. Nice pressing, packaging and beautiful voice.

Fantastic

Posted Wednesday, May 31, 2017 by EFY I have a lot of very good sounding records and a modest number of great sounding records. I have plenty that I love regardless of their fidelity. I have precious few that move me like this recording. I'm fascinated by it and I can't stop listening. Thanks to all involved, there is something very special happening here.

No to be missed.

Posted Wednesday, October 16, 2013 by Scott 1957 has never sounded better. This record sounds like it was recorded yesterday. You're probably familiar with the music and the players so you know what you're getting but this pressing takes this album to new level. Another excellent pressing from Chad's presses too. Buy it, you won't regret it.

Fantastic!

Posted Tuesday, July 16, 2013 by Ian Wow, what a great treasure. The music is on the relaxed, less ambitious side of the spectrum, but the playing is sincere and involving nonetheless.

The mastering and pressing is superb. Quality Records is getting better and better (pretty soon I'll be buying music I don't even like just because of the quality).

Highly recommended. Heck, there's an appearance by Ben Webster that is beautiful.

Shelly Manne/Bill Evans - Empathy Product No: AVRJ 8497-45

Classic, Classic, Classic!

5 Stars
Posted Tuesday, July 16, 2013 by Anonymous I have had this recording since the 1960s. I saw Manne and Budwig at the Manne Hole several times (illegally, since I was not yet 21). I basically have everything Bill Evens recorded and saw him in person at least a dozen times. This recording is unique. Evens is almost playful. I look forward to hearing it in its new threads. Perhaps my 50 year old LP can get a rest.

WOW!

5 Stars
Posted Friday, February 22, 2013 by TonyG Nothing short of amazing. My system is particularly good for horns/jazz/vocals. I have 5 other of Holiday's Verve recordings: 2 Japanese vinyl re-issues (mono), an original Verve mono, and a Classic 200 gm re-issue. Until now the Japanese were my reference demos. Now, it's this. I can't believe I'd ever be spending $50 on a record, but this is money well spent. Right up there with with their 45RPM re- issue of Dexter Gordon's "Go!"
