180-gram LP pressed by Pallas in Germany

Mastered from the original 1974 1/4" stereo tape by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering

Apostrophe(') (1974), together with Over-nite Sensation encapsulates the extraordinary musical diversity of Frank Zappa and were also the two most commercially successful albums that he released.

Apostrophe (') became Frank Zappa's second gold and only Top Ten album with the help of the "doggy wee-wee" jokes of "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow," Zappa's first chart single (a longer, edited version that used portions of other songs on the LP).

"The first half of the album is full of nonsensical shaggy-dog story songs that segue into one another without seeming to finish themselves first; their dirty jokes are generally more subtle and veiled than the more notorious cuts on Over-Nite Sensation.

"The second half contains the instrumental title cut, featuring Jack Bruce on bass; "Uncle Remus," an update of Zappa's critique of racial discord on "Trouble Every Day"; and a return to the album's earlier silliness in "Stink-Foot." Apostrophe (') has the narrative feel of a concept album, but aside from its willful absurdity, the concept is difficult to decipher; even so, that doesn't detract from its entertainment value." — AllMusic

Excellent Pallas Pressing

This is a really good pressing. No surface noise issues at all. The record looked perfect. The recording is a strong one with a relatively high volume level.

Frank's voice is perfectly captured and well-focused. You will have no difficulties understanding everything Frank says. The recording is so clear, all of the instruments are easy to pick out if you try. The soundfield is adequately wide, but with not a lot of depth. The music, however, seems to fill the room easily. There is an "in your face" kind of feel to this record, as if the band is playing very close, perhaps in the same room as you.

This is easily the best I've ever heard Zappa. Grade: 5+

Near perfect.

Frank and crew will be in your room. My only small complaint is the guitar sound (especially on title track) isn't quite as 'fat' as I'd like (think zz top tres hombres reissue). Other than that, it's great.

Zappa On Pallas

One of the late Zappa's more "commercial" releases, this reissue, like the recent releases before it, spruces up the sonics on a perfectly flat, dead-quiet pressing (business as usual for Pallas). Always one of the better-sounding titles from Zappa's early '70s-era catalog, this is the 2012 "tweezed" remaster that improves on the original's dynamic range, separation, depth, and soundstaging. Purists may still prefer the 1st-generation Discreet pressing, but this version does it no disservice. A great album from a musical genius.
