Liam Finn's new album The Nihilist comprises 12 tracks presenting Liam at his most refined and inventive in the studio, with other-worldly arrangements and blissfully catchy hooks. Liam plays 67 instruments on the record and maniacally assembled the album with contributions from frequent bandmates/collaborators Eliza Jane Barnes (vocals), his brother Elroy (drums) and fellow NZ songwriter Jol Mulholland (bass) in sessions entirely between the hours of sunset and sunrise in a Brooklyn studio overlooking the Manhattan skyline.

So credit the younger Finn with pursuing his own muse via a series of successful solo ventures that's yielded two previous long players as well as an additional EP.

The slow roll of 'Ocean Emmanuelle' with its cooing harmonies, the ricochet rhythms of 'Wild Animal' and the perky Prince-like title track maintain that connection, allowing more experimental songs like 'Miracle Glance,' 'I,' 'Arrow' and 'Helen Bonham Carter' to stray well past the parameters. ...
