Since her oustanding debut Neptune City in 2007, Nicole Atkins has continued to push boundaries creatively, pairing her warm, distinctive vocals with varied levels of instrumentation and never shying away from catchier, upbeat tunes, reports Paste magazine, in its lead-in to Atkins' newest offering Slow Phaser. Released on Atkins' own new independent label, Oh'Mercy! records, Slow Phaser has both the material and moxie to bring Atkins' bubbling-under status to a boil, says the New York Daily News.
“Slow Phaser is a dark, desert disco rock album made during a year of wandering about in city alleys, broken shores and snowy Viking lands,” Atkins told the paper. “I wanted to turn the lights up just enough to dance through the darkness.”
"Nicole Atkins has a bullet-proof voice. Gleaming in tone, piercing in volume and unstoppable in attitude, it rips right through you. It's the ideal vehicle for a song like 'Cool People,' ... a sarcastic takedown of hipster culture, delivered with a confidence that, ironically, makes Atkins seem like the coolest person in the room. ... Atkins’ songs have enough range to recall a Kurt Weill art-song in 'It’s Only Chemistry.' But it’s her voice that ties it all together, with a sound sure enough to let the vulnerability of her words proudly show." — NY Daily News, February 2014
