180-gram vinyl, double LP

Mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering

With the rights to all of groundbreaking composer Frank Zappa's music back home with the Zappa Family Trust, fans can look forward to more freshly remastered music being released on vinyl. To celebrate this, the estate has signed a global license and distribution deal with Universal Music Enterprises to release 60 of the iconic composer's recordings. The UME deal includes the entire Zappa Catalog as it appeared on Frank Zappa's own independent label, Barking Pumpkin Records. Many of the original analog masters have been re-mastered for this occasion.

Pumpkin Records. Joe Travers, vaultmaster for the Frank Zappa archives, is working with Chris Bellman of Bernie Grundman mastering on the new vinyl projects. Freak Out! is a 180-gram reissue of the original 1966 stereo mix of the album whose title still says it all. The album marked Frank Zappa's legendary debut album with the Mothers of Invention and proved to be rock 'n' roll's first concept/double album.

Originally issued on Verve Records in June of 1966, Freak Out! is the debut album by The Mothers of Invention led by Zappa. Produced by Tom Wilson, Freak Out! is cited as one of rock music's first concept albums, first double albums, and first double album debuts, centered around Zappa's satirical view of American popular culture. The album was honored with a Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999.

"A master guitarist and provocateur, Frank Zappa made more than 60 albums, but the first was perhaps the most groundbreaking. The double disc declared the arrival of a visionary weirdo who dabbled in doo-wop, pop-song parody, protest tunes, art rock and avant-garde classical." — No. 246 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

I have a copy of this record and a copy of the original. This presentation is just a little grittier than the original but it is still very good. And, much less expensive than a clean original. I recommend it and spin more often than the original.

According to Michael Fremer..... This was mastered from a digital copy made by Zappa in 1987. FZ made the transfer using the Sony dash PCM 3324 at 44.1K 16 bit back in 1987 because the tape was already badly deteriorating and at the time that was the best they could do.
