"Rudy Van Gelder captured this Prestige title in stereo, and it reflects his consistently fine work. Tonally it's a touch on the light side, but otherwise the band's energy is clearly and dynamically captured, with a decent sense of air and focus. Kevin Gray did the mastering of this excellent QRP platter, so the quality of this welcome reissue is as good as it gets." — Music = 4/5; Sonics = 3.5/5 - Wayne Garcia, The Absolute Sound, September 2016.

Booker Ervin's recordings with Charles Mingus and Randy Weston brought him good reviews and a bit of notoriety. But it was his series of Song Books for Prestige Records that broadcast the stentorian announcement that a jazz orator of gigantic stature had arrived. Ervin's tenor saxophone sound was haunted by the loneliness and spaciousness of the Texas plains where he was raised. The Southwest moan was an integral part of his playing. But his style went beyond the classic Texas tenor tradition to incorporate the intricacies of bebop and suggestions of the free jazz that was initiating one of the periods of self-renewal that keeps jazz fresh and interesting. The Freedom Book, recorded at the end of 1963, was one of Ervin's masterpieces. He is abetted by the power and drive of Jaki Byard, Richard Davis, and Alan Dawson.

Booker Ervin has something to say here and it's not the same old tenor sax imitated over and over. His musical message is fresh, his tone all his own and I like what he has to say. The pressing by QRP is up to their high standards.

This is my first exposure to Booker Ervin, love it. My favorite musically of the Prestige Stereo series so far. Great sonically as well.

The first two titles that AP produced in this series blew my socks off. This title I wasn't familiar with and while I can't fault AP in any way (mastering and pressing is superb), I can't say that I enjoy listening to this; Ervin's playing style grates on my nerves very quickly. Of course YMMV.

I'm really just pointing out if that you aren't familiar with this title, you may want to hear some samples first.

Another stellar reissue by Analogue productions from the venerable Prestige catalogs. Booker is not well known to most Jazz fans but after hearing this record on this reissue you will wish you knew him, but even better you will be glad you bought this record.

As usual AP has spared no expense on this reissue, top of the line tip-on jacket, impressive slab of 200G vinyl deep groove label with exact replica and last but not the least sonic quality second to none.

If you don't have a copy on the way you are missing out on what is a stellar record by one of the best saxophonist ever!

You will spend some money this year on a reissue that will be so lifeless you will want to quit buying records, this AP release is the antidote to that lifeless reissue cut from trashy digital files!
