Koko Taylor was working as a house cleaner in Chicago while building a reputation as one of the city's most powerful blues singers.

Born Cora Walton near Memphis, Tennessee, Taylor moved to Chicago in the 1950s and immersed herself in the city's thriving blues scene. Her commanding voice soon caught the attention of legendary songwriter and producer Willie Dixon, who helped launch her recording career with Checker Records, a subsidiary of Chess Records.

In 1965, Taylor recorded "Wang Dang Doodle," a Willie Dixon-penned blues classic that became her signature song and a major hit in 1966. The record introduced her music to audiences around the world and established her as one of the leading voices in Chicago blues.

Throughout the decades, Taylor recorded favorites including "I'm A Woman" and "Voodoo Woman," earning numerous honors while helping carry the blues tradition to new generations of listeners! Taylor continued recording and performing extensively into the 21st century, her 2000 release Royal Blue receiving a Grammy Nomination for best blues album.

IMPECCABLE Reissue of a Classic! posted on 10/24/2026 5 Stars Reviewer: Larry H. As only Acoustic Sounds can deliver, this is an amazing reissue that is 1st class in quality! The 180g vinyl is flat and plays as silent as a tomb. Every track is clear and well balanced. Everything has its place. Vocals are spot on; the rhythm section is strong but not overpowering, guitars are crystal clear and horns float in the middle of it all. Most tracks were written by Willie Dixon and Koko Taylor did justice to them all! The collection seemed to start out strong and get progressively better as you move to Side 2. Finally, the Willie and Koko duet on "Insane Asylum" was incredible and to finish with "Yes, It's Good for You" was icing on the top of some great, great Chicago Blues!! Housed in a beautifully created, gatefold jacket, this one is a winner inside and out! Thank you to Chad for his supervision, Matthew Lutthans for his mastering skills and the QRP team for the stellar vinyl. A "must have" for all blues fans!
