"The original Verve recording probably sounded pretty good anyway with the label's trademark Living Sound Fidelity: Higher highs, lower lows, without the hangover. Chad Kassem, who as usual supervises the reissue for his Acoustic Sounds, keeps the clean audio of Verve's original, finding ways to improve what was already there in the grooves. That's what he does." — Music = 8/11; Sound = 9/11 — Wayne Robins, TrackingAngle.com. Read the entire review here.
Tormé is an uptempo gem that Mel Torme swings to perfection. Nicknamed "The Velvet Fog," Torme was a noted singer, composer, arranger, drummer and actor. This self-titled 1958 studio album was his first record for Verve.
Reviewer John Bush, writing for AllMusic, gives the album 4 Stars, saying Torme skillfully blends both carefree and reflective numbers. "For every bouncy single like 'That Old Feeling' or 'I'm Gonna Laugh You Out of My Life,'" there's drama in "'Gloomy Sunday,' 'The House Is Haunted (By the Echo of Your Last Goodbye),' and his dramatic eight-minute reading of 'Blues in the Night.'"
Seeking to offer definitive audiophile grade versions of some of the most historic and best jazz records ever recorded, Verve's Acoustic Sounds vinyl reissue series utilizes the skills of top mastering engineers and the unsurpassed production craft of Quality Record Pressings. All titles are mastered from the original analog tapes, pressed on 180-gram vinyl and packaged by Stoughton Printing Co. in high-quality gatefold sleeves with tip-on jackets. The releases are supervised by Chad Kassem, CEO of Acoustic Sounds, the world's largest source for audiophile recordings.
