The Ohio Players breakthrough record, Skin Tight was released in April 1974 on Mercury Records. Skin Tight was a massive hit album, selling more copies than all of the band's previous albums combined. It features a more refined jazz-funk style and started a period of significant album sales for the band, which included three platinum-selling albums in a row: Skin Tight, Fire and Honey.

On August 17, 2013, Ohio Players were inducted into the inaugural class of the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame that took place at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio.
