Stereophile's Revinylization Best New LP Reissue for August 2022!

"Analogue Productions and a few other vinyl-oriented labels are indeed pursuing sonic excellence with their reissues. Done right, this requires attention to every facet of the audio and physical-media production chain. (This) new copy of Are You Experienced is immaculately flat — a fully flat profile is one of the virtues of the Clarity Vinyl process — and visually transparent, with a well-centered spindle hole. Surface noise is almost nonexistent, contributing to outstanding detail and texture. Those black backgrounds viscerally enhance the huge dynamic range of this recording and the resulting impact. ... I did a three-way vinyl comparison: my original Reprise stereo copy from 1967, the 2010 stereo version remastered by Eddie Kramer, and this new UHQR issue. The tracks on Are You Experienced vary in the amount and depth of bass due to choices made during the recording and mixing. On this new UHQR LP, when the low end is there, it's just beautiful — as at the beginning of 'The Wind Cries Mary.' Another big winner is the sound and definition of Mitch Mitchell's drums; his jazzy attack on 'Third Stone from the Sun' is a shining example. When Jimi leans in, as he does on 'Foxy Lady,' it doesn't sound like he's bending a string; it sounds like he's tying his guitar into knots. ... On the system I have now, with this pressing, I can experience at least a heavy echo of the energy I felt when I first encountered the album all those years ago." — Revinylization by Sasha Matson, Stereophile, August 2022

"... the copies that arrived with me were as perfect vinyl pressings as possible. ... The booklet is now expanded to 20 pages. ... (It) now includes a number of extra photographs along with additional essays from Brad Tolinski and John McDermott to sit with the original Dave Marsh essay. ... What was apparent from the off, once the needle hit the clarity vinyl, this vinyl pressing was dead silent. Over all, unquestionably a pressing to the highest standard; as quiet as a physical pressing you could wish for which in turn allowed the vinyl formula's black background to deliver on its part, flat and centered. These points allowed the record to shine in its own right. The flat profile was noticeable once again with no deviation from delivery from start to end of each side. ... Grundman's part in bringing this to us as is — well, it's been a long time coming, but worth the wait — 20,000 copies is not many, really. This is unlikely to be presented any better any time soon if ever." Gordon Johnson, jmhvinyl.co.uk, April 9, 2022. Read the entire review here.

"...sonically (prior editions) can't touch this new Bernie Grundman mastering using the original tapes and pressed UHQR flat profile on 200g Clarity vinyl at QRP. I compared this new version to the original and to all of the other Experience Hendrix reissues and Bernie's got them all beat in terms of dynamics, three-dimensionality and especially transparency — a quality I never thought to assign this recording but one listen will convince you that it's there. I've been playing this record in one version or another since August of 1967 and I knew there was a 'mouth pop' on 'Purple Haze' but nonetheless when it came I jumped and adrenaline flowed so present and 3 dimensional was the 'pop.' This is one of the classic albums from the rock era and it's never sounded this good. This version will most likely never be bettered" —  Music = 10/11; Sound = 10/11 - Michael Fremer, AnalogPlanet.com. Read Fremer's full review here.

Analogue Productions presents another UHQR classic titleJimi Hendrix's classic Are You Experienced. And working together with Quality Record Pressings, this reissue is a true collector's gem — an Ultra High Quality Record (UHQR) release!

This stereo UHQR reissue will be limited to 20,000 copies, with gold foil individually numbered jackets.

When it was first released in 1967, Are You Experienced turned the music world upside down, as Hendrix showed everyone exactly what it meant to be "experienced." Hendrix synthesized various elements of the cutting edge of 1967 rock into music that sounded both futuristic and rooted in the best traditions of rock, blues, pop, and soul. It was his mind-boggling guitar work, of course, that got most of the ink, charting new sonic territories in feedback, distortion, and sheer volume. It wouldn't have meant much, however, without his excellent material, whether psychedelic frenzy ("Foxey Lady," "Manic Depression," "Purple Haze"), instrumental freak-out jams ("Third Stone from the Sun"), blues ("Hey Joe"), or tender, poetic compositions ("The Wind Cries Mary") that demonstrated the breadth of his songwriting talents. Not to be underestimated were the contributions of drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding, who gave the music a rhythmic pulse that fused parts of rock and improvised jazz.

Jimi's thoughts on the recasting of his debut album in the U.S. by Reprise Records, who added "The Wind Cries Mary," "Purple Haze" and "Hey Joe" to the original 11-track list, aren't entirely known. But Jimi did vocalize his frustration during later stage performances that "Red House," his superb original blues composition, had been pulled from the U.S. album.

The U.S. track version released in August 1967. Included are the group's first three U.K. singles "Purple Haze," "Hey Joe" and "The Wind Cries Mary."

This UHQR is remastered by the legendary Bernie Grundman from the original analog master tapes. Each UHQR will be pressed at Acoustic Sounds' industry-leading pressing plant Quality Record Pressings (QRP) using hand-selected Clarity Vinyl® with attention paid to every single detail. These records will feature the same flat profile that helped to make the original UHQR so desirable. From the lead-in groove to the run-out groove, there is no pitch to the profile, allowing the customer's stylus to play truly perpendicular to the grooves from edge to center. Clarity Vinyl allows for the purest possible pressing and the most visually stunning presentation. Every UHQR will be hand inspected upon pressing completion, and only the truly flawless will be allowed to go to market. Each UHQR will be packaged in a deluxe box and will include a booklet detailing the entire process of making a UHQR along with a hand-signed certificate of inspection. This will be a truly deluxe, collectible product.

More About Clarity Vinyl

As we set out to make the world's best vinyl record, we began by establishing a set of exacting standards to address all of the components that comprise an LP. We call our records made under these strict standards Ultra High Quality Records (UHQR). Most audiophiles would understand that the list of critical components in UHQR includes recording, mastering, plating, pressing and quality control. But some may stop short of considering the raw material used to make the record: the vinyl itself.

We did some research and learned some interesting things about the history of the iconic black vinyl record. The most compelling revelation to us was the fact that LP vinyl is not black in its pure state. The off-white color of the record you are about to listen to is the color of raw vinyl in its purest form (un-tinted vinyl). The black color you're used to seeing is a colorant called "carbon black" that was part of the original compound formulation used in old shellac records. As vinyl compound replaced shellac-based compound, carbon black continued to be used as a colorant. We've expected our records to be black ever since.

To make the ultimate record, we decided to enhance sound quality by removing anything we believed could detract from it. Record styli vibrate (or jitter) on a microscopic level, and any particles of carbon black pigment that happen to be on the surface of the groove could introduce surface noise. By not adding carbon black to our Clarity Vinyl, we eliminate the possibility of noise contamination due to carbon black particles. Instead, your stylus is allowed to effortlessly slide down a glossy and silky smooth groove wall.

When we purchased Classic Records, the brand name Clarity Vinyl® came with it. We're proud to have resurrected, refined and trademarked Clarity Vinyl, the perfect canvas for our masterpiece: vinyl in its purest form.

I only own 3 UHQRs and this is the one I listen to most...the explosive opener "Purple Haze" "Hey Joe" and "The Wind Cries Mary" are mind meldingly good and the pressing immaculate. As a desert island disk worth every penny!! Yes I could do without the box but the gatefold jacket and packaging are first rate!!!

Yes, everything you read is right. This is what vinyl should be. The only downside is that you’ll won’t like the rest of your collection quite as much after hearing this. This is my first UHQR purchase, and definitely won’t be my last!

After reading about this UHQR pressing process I decided to order the Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced LP and wow, it lives up to all the hype. First off, let's start with the packaging which was second to none. The case/sleeve the vinyl was in along with the inserts was high quality and first class. Now the vinyl itself in one word, perfect. I literally thought I was listening to a digital source. This pressing was clear in sound, quiet and free of the typical surface noise you get on most new vinyl. I was very impressed to say the least and will diffinatly order other UHQR pressings in the future. BTW, shipping was also fast.

I just finished listening to this album and omg this thing is amazing. You may ask yourself is it worth the money and the answer is YES. If you are looking for dead quiet tracks and hearing things in recordings that you haven’t heard before then splurge for this recording. If you listen to this album and refuse to give it 5 stars you might want to check your components because this thing is pure bliss!!!!!!!

It's extremely expensive and yea it sounds ok but not nearly what I paid for it. There is also a lot of background hiss. Especially on "Purple Haze"

Wow! I'm with every one else with this GEM of a album! This is by far one of the best sounding Jimi Hendrix album I've ever heard it's like hearing it for the very 1st time..I'm heating things in the background that I never heard before, dead quiet sound, and when Jimi vocals open up, well it's like your their watching and listening to him..Get this before it's gone! It has that 3d dimension sound that is hard to describe. I'm in love all over again with this special Pressings! Well done crew!

This was almost an impulse purchase, but I was able to control myself until I researched it thoroughly. I have many original pressings from the era, as well as current reissues of high end heavy vinyl, and this is without a doubt one of the best that I've ever had! Everything from presentation and packaging, to the incredibly clear and quiet pressing itself, absolutely perfect to my ears! I originally had a 2nd pressing from the '70s when I was a teenager, as well as other versions since, but I'm so glad that I pulled the trigger on this, and actually thinking about getting another, they're that impressive! An outstanding offering from the UHQR series. I'm quite certain that I'll be a repeat customer!

Love this UHQR. I compared it to the Bernie Grundman

AP SACD, original pressing and a red book CD. Was

kinda nervous given how let down I was by the BG mastered AP SACD. Hands down this UHQR is the best version that will ever be released. Don’t see how it can be further improved from this one. Never considered this an audiophile album until I heard this new BG mastered UHQR. Wind Cries Mary is the real highlight. Come on Chad bring on Electric Ladyland in UHQR!

I'm just stunned at how good this pressing of Jimi's Landmark AYE album is. Hard rock albums from the '60's can sound thin and lacking, but this UHQR sweeps all of that away. The sound is full, clean, quiet, balanced, and multi-dimensional, everything an audiophile would want it to be. The packaging is a celebration of an extraordinary album from a truly great artist. I cannot imagine this album sounding any better in this vinyl format. Best of all, this album transports you to that magical time in 1967 when the finest psychedelic hard rock was being made. This UHQR pressing isn't just a great sounding record; it is a loving tribute to one of the greatest musicians of all time. A special thank you goes out to Chad and his team for producing this excellent UHQR release.

Well, this was a lot of money- but after waiting- and playing- I can say this was so worth it. I'd never heard all of the information on this record before this version. The tonal distinction of Jimi's voice sounded like I was in the studio with him as a young man. And the copy I received was dead quiet. The packaging was superb, but I don't really care about that. It's the sound that I was after, and this version delivered! Thanks, Chad!

I'll be honest, I was on the fence because I have a copy of the QRP that came out in 2014 I think? That one is very good, but this is a notch better. Anyway, I'm glad I decided to pull the trigger. Love or Confusion sounds so good. The real gem on this is the Wind Cries Mary though. Wow! Goosebumps

This album is able to clean up the muddy sound I associate with Hendrix albums. Here, there is separation of the players, producing a wide presentation. The drums sounded sharp and the cymbals clean, Jimi's voice is more focused than I have heard it before. I would grade the sound 9/10 if I were just reviewing it as an audiophile recording. Not only that, the record is very quiet - I heard maybe a click or two on the entire record.

The packaging is wonderful. You get a booklet of mostly pictures of the band, a gatefold outer jacket (which has no bar code). On the back of the jacket you will find stamped the number of the record (out of 20,000 units). The quality of the presentation is absolutely top notch. My clarity record looks utterly flawless - it didn't even have so much as those light scratches you see in the runout groove.

I have the Axis Bold as Love SACD, and this record is on par with it.

Yes! A winner. I cant imagine this album sounding any better than it does here with this UHQR. It is as good as Axis (that one left my jaw on the floor). Great packaging and super quiet vinyl. No brainer if you are a Hendrix fan and want the best. To the reviewers wondering why there is no serial #: There is. It's on the gatefold album sleeve, NOT on the outside of the box. I approve. Might this affect the scalping? Hope so. I say this to point out that you should GET THIS NOW. Don't pay a ransom later.

vinyl. 3rd Stone From the Sun is an experience indeed

and my favorite track with an extremely wide sound

stage and crisp drumming from Mitch Mitchell, wide

ranging sound effects and great guitar work from JH; a

real showcase for your system. This album more than

lived up to my expectations and then some! I’d love to

see “Electric Ladyland” as a UHQR some day.

Hats off to Acoustic Sounds! This is an awesome package for one of the most iconic and important recordings in music history. Listening to this took me back 55 years ago when a spaceship from Mars dropped off this recording and music!! It was literally music that was never heard before or since on this debut album. After 55 years this recording is still unmatched and still sounds fresh and powerful. Highly recommended!

You might as well sign me up for that now.

No Serial Number -- ?

I agree with all of the reviews above regarding sound and packaging. Curious -- why no serial number for each box? I acknowledge that with little exception the serial number is more of a marketing ploy than an indicator of sound quality. Especially since the vinyl is stuffed into sleeves in a somewhat random order. Will the omission of the serial number be QRP policy from now forward? Just curious.

-- Fantastic pressing, by the way.

I think it's fair to say another home run for the UHQR Analogue Productions series. Undoubtedly the best sounding Are You Experienced on vinyl that money can buy. The album bursts with iconic songs, and everyone will surely have their favorites, but the ones where the UHQR and AP treatment really stood out for me are May There Be Love and The Wind Cries Mary where the voicing is just utterly fantastic.

Got to listen to this new UHQR 4 times already and simply blown away! Maybe even a notch better sounding than the stereo version of Axis Bold As Love. Amazing soundstage delivers such clarity to the music like never before. Easily the best version I have heard of this record. One time I have to disagree with Mr. Fremer...Sound - 11/11

Chad please bring us Electric Ladyland soon.

Received my copy today, and any expectations I may have had were instantly blown away. This album has never sounded this good. Bernie Grundman has once again made something old, new again. The sound quality here is staggering, and on my second listen there were several moments where I actually got goosebumps, and you can’t fake goosebumps. The soundscape is unbelievably clean, and the pressing is pure perfection. I have purchased all the UHQR’s that Analog Productions have released, and now my hope is that they do Electric Ladyland next. This release is completely worth the price, and I’m absolutely over the moon with this one. Hearing this for the first time was like a spiritual experience, or the most powerful natural high I could possibly imagine. Grab this before it’s gone, you won’t be disappointed.
