Pelliccia - Metastasio/Anfossi: Giuseppe Riconosciuto

The stylistic apex of the Italian oratorio is concentrated in the period in which poetry and composition achieve an ideal state of balance, performing a complimentary function. This phase seems to be reached in the 1700s, provoked by the chronological coincidence of the librettos of Apostolo Zeno and Pietro Metastasio with the introduction of that new composition technique that begins to move away from the heavy basso continuo in favor of a lighter structure, geared towards the melody of the higher voice. Despite the fact that these new tendencies were evident throughout Italy, the excellent role of the Neapolitan school in this sense is indisputable.
