Sarah Vaughan - Live At The Laren Jazz Festival Product No: ATLRE 1604022

Category: 180 Gram Vinyl Record
Label: The Lost Recordings

Posted Monday, July 3, 2023 by Mark When this series was announced, I decided I was not going to pay $70 for Optimal pressings . it wouldn't matter what they were. Then, this and other titles in the series became available at sale prices so I took a punt. If I had known what this album contained I would have happily paid full price on release day. I have studio albums by Vaughan, they are nice, but I now realise they are safe and controlled productions with care taken as though Vaughan is conscious that she is creating her legacy. In this live setting, and to a jazz festival audience, Vaughan is unrestrained and risk-taking. I had no idea who Sarah Vaughan really was or what she was capable of, until I heard this record.

Killer Remaster

Posted Friday, April 7, 2023 by Anonymous Got a chance to listen through yesterday, and the mastering's fantastic. Immediately sold my Vinyl Me Please pressing after hearing this one. Great reproduction on the jacket, as well.

Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong - Ella & Louis Again Product No: AVER 74701

Label: Verve (Acoustic Sounds Series)

Go for the second helping.

Posted Tuesday, January 17, 2023 by Anonymous Another gem. I have all the acoustic sounds series releases. Ella's and Louis again is right up there with the best of them. I also have the Ella's Swinging Christmas. It is labeled Sterophonic while the earlier two releases must be mono recordings. I do wish it could be confirmed that the reissues are in true mono. When playing on my Grado Prestige MONO cart it sounds much better than on my STEREO turntable.

Spectacular!

Posted Friday, December 2, 2022 by Anonymous I had heard that the tapes for this release were in bad shape. You wouldn't know it from this stellar reissue. Much better than the Speakers Corner version, which itself was better than the original. And the cover is great too-Stoughton at its best!

Art Blakey - Live In Scheveningen 1958 Product No: ATLRE 1804034

Label: The Lost Recordings

Very nice, of the 3 “Lost Recording” I have this is the best.

5 Stars
Posted Monday, February 7, 2022 by Michael Renwick Very quiet vinyl. Album starts off with Art speaking and introducing the band, not a peep of noise, one would think this was pressed at QRP. Slight warp on both discs but livable. The content is great, starts with Moanin. Seems to be tape drop out or someone bumped a mic on side c, heard a noise I’ve never heard before but only for a few seconds. The ballad to Clifford Brown is fantastic, really shows off the dynamic range. The master is odd to me, almost like it’s cut on an all tube system, I find I have to bump the volume to achieve normal results, this is on all the Lost Recordings releases too. Art’s”ode” to Blue Note is funny, I enjoyed him introducing all the tracks. Felt Like I was there.

John Coltrane - 'Live' At The Village Vanguard Product No: AIMP 78201

Label: Impulse (Acoustic Sounds Series)

Great Recording

5 Stars
Posted Saturday, January 22, 2022 by Brian VanPelt The recording sounds pristine and the instruments sound like they are in the room. The layout involves the piano and Contrane on the left, the drums and Dolphy on the right, and the bass is in the center.

Both Coltrane and Dolphy sound very clean and have the most "in your room" sound, but the drums are not far behind. The piano is sharp, but a little subdued relatively speaking. I could hear the bass even when all the other instruments were simultaneously playing.

Overall, the sound is excellent, although there are a few times when Coltrane turns his head away from the mic, and it sounds almost like tape dropouts.

The outer jacket is a nice, stout, tip-on, gatefold jacket. The inner sleeve is an anti-static bag.

My copy's pressing is nice, but on side 2 there are very light scratches spiraling through the inner groove and into the last song. These scratches are so faint, you can only see them at certain angles. They have no sonic effect.

Vivid and Spacious

5 Stars
Posted Friday, January 21, 2022 by Brian VanPelt The soundstage is wide and it seems filled from left to right. The flute and the drums are in the middle, while all the other instruments appear in the left or right speakers - approximately, since the presentation is so wide, the music can sometimes seem to stetch beyond the speakers.

I turned this one way up, and the surface noise is almost nonexistent. The record itself looked almost flawless. Sometimes you can look at a record, and know that it's going to be buttery smooth, and this record is like that.

While the jazz is cool, the band does go to town often. I was surprised by the size of the presentation, and it hit me right at the moment the needle hit the record. There is some singing, and I usually don't want that in a jazz album, but here it was unobtrusive and added enjoyment to the music.

Overall, this record is near perfect in sound and in pressing.

Ella at her very best!

5 Stars
Posted Saturday, October 30, 2021 by Anonymous Wow! This just arrived today and I am entranced! OK, I realize this is not technically an Analogue Productions release, but it is from the Acoustic Sounds Series overseen by Chad Kassem and his crew at Acoustic Sounds. This one is spectacular! A wonderful pressing by QRP that is crystal clear, very dynamic and dead quiet. One of the very best in my collection. Sure its a Christmas album but, any day is a good day to enjoy Ella. Get this one for sure!

Fun record

5 Stars
Posted Monday, September 9, 2013 by JeffB I knew the name of Shorty Rogers, but not his music. I went to another site to hear some samples and decided to take a chance on this. It's a lot of fun with some really good big band arrangements. Plus the pressing and mastering is really good too. If you're looking for a jazz album with a different flavor to it, give this one a try.

Smooth Jazz With Balls

4 Stars
Posted Thursday, February 11, 2010 by JT I bought this LP for two reasons: To hear Brecker and Gadd, and to try out the new Eighty Eights label. I am not disappointed. Very punchy, warm analog sound, well recorded. The quality of the LP is of the highest standards, heavy vinyl, crisp labels, thick cover in plastic (Japanese). No blow you away riffs here, just great sounding, well recorded music.

Marty Paich - I Get a Boot Out Of You Product No: AWAR 360572
Available: LimitedStock
Category: 180 Gram Vinyl Record
Label: Warner Bros.

Great cover, great album

5 Stars
Posted Saturday, March 7, 2009 by David Stephens Off and on over the decades I've admired this cover. Only recently did I think, "It's Marty Paich, you big dummy, it's got to be good." Well, it is wonderful, with the classic "West Coast" big band vibe. The soloists include the incredible Pete Condoli, Art Pepper, Jack Sheldon, etc.

The sonics are excellent. Evidently it was simply miked with solo spotlight mics. If you like that classic swing with great soloists, this is a must have.
