I will say of all the MB20 albums this is my favorite. Previous digital and vinyl copies of this album that I have owned have all sounded compressed, noisy, grungy, ear fatiguing. Then this AP reissue comes along. AP got it right. Great soundstage and clarity. And those guitar chords have that nice GRRR sound. AP & Ryan K Smith brought out the best of this recording. It sounds better than any previous version I have heard. I won't mind playing this one over and over and over for my wife (and maybe a few times for myself).

After playing this disc, you will forever forget every other version of this album you have heard in the past 55 years. If you have to buy only one SACD this year, make it this one.

Kudos to Mobile Fidelity (finally, at long last, they did a superb job).

Posted Monday, February 24, 2025 by Alex First off, this SACD sounds wonderful. Balanced, the drums smack you in the face, bass is tight and present, and the golden pipes of Paul Rodgers are front and center as they should be.

However, a big question is why the SACD release of Straight Shooter was sourced from a copy of the master tape, while the vinyl version was from the original master tape? Most of the Atlantic 75 series have the same source material from the vinyl and SACD. Would be very curious to know the answer to this question.

If you have that there is no need for the Sacd Version. I think the Japan version sounds a lot better. The reason, No DSD was used to transfer it to cd.

AP has released this album on SACD in stereo so now we have the best of both worlds for those who prefer one version over the other.

IMO, the stereo version on AP is THE definitive version regardless of your channel preference.

Five stars for the music and five stars for this SACD reissue.

The Reverb he creates is astounding. I had never heard of this performance and it was not even on my radar. i bought it on the reputation of the past Esoteric recording that I own. It may be the best on that I have. The playing is fantastic and the recording is wonderful One minor compliant. I feel that this may have been better in mono. The stereo is wide and sounds a little unnatural. If you love Bach as I do, this is worth seeking out. You may wish to find a way to listen to the performance before spending the $$ but I am so glad I purchased it.

Reference mastering

Posted Thursday, April 4, 2024 by Anonymous Comparing the earlier audiphile effort (DCC Gold cd / Steve Hoffman) this mastering can easily be better than that which widely considered to be a reference mastering among the audiophiles - to date. This has smoother, parallelly rich-in-detaills sound. Hardly any trace of a "forced digital processing" especially in treble. Eliminated distortion. Beautiful vocal sound. Sounds smoother than DCC Gold cd.. Airy and easy "light as feather" - very pleasant listening. Congrats Mr. Britton!

It is a great album and it should like you are in the studio with the players. Do not miss out on this one.
