Why don't more labels release new music on SACD? Whatever, this album is 5 stars all the way. John is a guitar master and his music is quite varied. I could not find a site to preview this album (not on Qobuz or YouTube anyway) so I didn't really know what to expect. I am NOT disappointed. As a modern jazz fan I can find nothing to say other than listen to this album, it will make you smile, tap your foot and finally get up and dance Better still, the song The Beat Goes On throws in a heaping dollop of Blues Rock to get the energy level up a couple of notches.

Posted Tuesday, December 23, 2025 by J.B. I grew up listening to this album. A lot. As good as the 1995 Avenue Gold Collection (24K gold) CD was, this one is far superior. Detail and spectral balance are both excellent, without being at all edgy-sounding. Very natural and reminiscent of the original 1976 UA vinyl (which I still have a NM copy of). In fact, something in the vocal detail on "Why Can't We Be Friends?" I never picked up on before caught my attention on the first listen of this SACD. Very highly recommended!

They don't play complete songs but probably Richard has mixed them so segments flow into another song. Entertaining and beautiful but sometimes you want to hear a song in its entirety. Go for the Singles 1969-1981 instead.

It does seem to sound different than I remember the original pressing sounding, a tad softer in the lower end...but it is a 50+ year old recording so the fact that we can even get a fresh release on SACD, it's decent enough.

Don't get me wrong, I like it, but it didn't meet my expectations in regards to sound. In my opinion, Katy Lied met and surpassed all my expectations.

Atomic Punk Sound

Dave's vocals have more punch and definition. Great SACD remaster. What I was hoping for. Get it before it goes out of print.

The clarity of the percussion really stands out to me. Whom ever remastered this did an outstanding job. 3 or 4 of these titles being reissued would make me very happy.

Compared to the MCA remastered cd, this sacd is better with a more open sound on everything along with a cleaner sound. Everything is more robust, especially the bass, drums, and voices sticking out in my mind. My only compaint is the liner notes, or lack of them. What happened to what Fagan & Becker wrote? It was a fun read. For $35.00, we deserve more. Even some new words from Fagan would have been nice,even appropriate at this price. Still, I am very happy and pleased with the sound.

I will say of all the MB20 albums this is my favorite. Previous digital and vinyl copies of this album that I have owned have all sounded compressed, noisy, grungy, ear fatiguing. Then this AP reissue comes along. AP got it right. Great soundstage and clarity. And those guitar chords have that nice GRRR sound. AP & Ryan K Smith brought out the best of this recording. It sounds better than any previous version I have heard. I won't mind playing this one over and over and over for my wife (and maybe a few times for myself).

After playing this disc, you will forever forget every other version of this album you have heard in the past 55 years. If you have to buy only one SACD this year, make it this one.

Kudos to Mobile Fidelity (finally, at long last, they did a superb job).
