2014 marks the 20th anniversary of Superunknown, the pivotal album from Soundgarden that changed alternative rock.

Via A&M Records and Universal Music Enterprises, this deluxe gatefold version features two LPs. Featuring the original 16 tracks.

Soundgarden is diving back into Superunknown with this set and other multi-disc, rarities-packed special editions of their breakthrough 1994 album. The album debuted at No. 1 when it was originally released and has been certified five times platinum by the RIAA in the United States, selling about nine million copies worldwide. It remains Soundgarden's most successful album and in 2003, was ranked No. 336 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The album was ranked number 38 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Albums of the Nineties, and No. 5 on Guitar World magazine's Top 10 list of Guitar Albums of 1994.

Superunknown catapulted Soundgarden into "known" status after getting some attention with 1990's Badmotorfinger. Sputnik Music calls it "an essential early-'90s album, often grouped with Nirvana's Nevermind and Pearl Jam's Ten." Memorable tracks include the title track, "Spoonman," "Fell On Black Days" and "Black Hole Sun," Soundgarden's biggest hit.

Superdisappointing posted on 05/19/2020 3 Stars Reviewer: Andrew One of my favorite albums of all time. But this is clearly sourced from digital, just like the original pressing. But worse, the mix is just awful. There are no mids to be heard, the lead guitar is usually lost completely in the noise unless there's not much riffing going on in the background. Usually, good records reveal more nuances than cd or digital, somehow, there are parts that just sound missing. I guess there's no hope we'll ever get a proper vinyl pressing of this. Guess I'm gonna pony up for the '320' pressing if one ever shows up on the used market ever again.

I would be interested to know how it stacks up against the 1994 vinyl, but a used set in great condition will cost you over $100. So for the price I have no complaints about this set. Discs are very flat, no surface noise and tonal balance is very pleasing and overall a nice package. One thing that I find totally pointless is the inclusion of 320kbps file download. Really? Why bother with a poor digital imitation when you have the vinyl? I think the only digital inclusion worth having would be a proper CD which at least gives you something closer to the vinyl to rip to your digital system in FLAC.
