Now brighter, clearer and more colorful than ever, The Beatles' "Yellow Submarine" still ranks as one of The Beatles' most famous works, even some 44 years after it's original release. Newly released on Blu-ray after a 4K frame-by-frame restoration, the animated odyssey also sounds better than ever due to a glorious stereo and 5.1 surround soundtrack. Join John, Paul, George and Ringo as they save Pepperland from the terrible Blue Meanies, armed with little more than their humour, songs and of course, their yellow submarine.
Originally developed as a creative way for the band to fulfill its contract with United Artists after making "Help!," "Yellow Submarine" gave The Beatles an opportunity to create a unique story that demanded a minimal time commitment. Presaging the music video era, the film focused more on pairing music with interesting imagery than telling a proper story, but it went on to be both a critical and commercial success.
Released concurrently with a reissue of the soundtrack, the Blu-ray features a high definition transfer created from the original negative, which was restored by hand. The single-disc release includes a short making-of documentary entitled "Mod Odyssey," the original theatrical trailer, an audio commentary by producer John Coates and art director Heinz Edelmann, interview clips with members of the cast and crew, storyboard sequences, original pencil drawings and behind-the-scenes photos. It's accompanied by a 16-page booklet and stickers.
