La Fille mal gardee is one of Sir Frederick Ashton's most enchanting ballets, and it quickly became popular after its first performance by the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden on January 28, 1960. The ballet's origins date back almost 200 years. The first version, which had a different title, was the creation of the French choreographer Jean Dauberval (1742-1806), who presented a story-ballet in the style of this master, Jean Georges Noverre, at the Grand Theatre, Bordeaux, on July 1, 1789, just before the French Revolution.
