"…just maybe, the first time I've heard a CD that does justice to a Super Disc analog original. The specific cuts I use here are 3, 5, and 6 (i.e. 'Mercury,' 'Saturn,' and 'Uranus'), each a revelation in itself." HP's Best-Sounding CDs and SACDs – Harry Pearson, The Absolute Sound, February 2008

Written by Gustav Holst over a three-year period in 1914, The Planets is a true masterpiece of classical music and features seven movements based on the planets in our own solar system excluding Pluto and the Earth itself. This world renowned piece, that has always overshadowed Holst’s other famous works of music, is conducted by Zubin Mehta and performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. From the thunderously charged emotion of "Mars, the Bringer of Wars" to the faint and distant passages of "Neptune, the Mystic," this release demonstrates the high quality of recordings made by Decca in the early ‘70s, as well as the highly refined sound of the XRCD 24 process. Listen and compare.

I. Mars, the Bringer of War – Allegro
II. Venus, the Bringer of Peace – Adagio
III. Mercury, the Winged Messenger – Vivace
IV. Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity – Allegro giocoso
V. Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age – Adagio
VI. Uranus, the Magician – Allegro
VII. Neptune, the Mystic – Andante

Flawless performance

From the opening of the album I was blown away by the dynamics and realism that this disc has. I could pinpoint instruments in the space precisely! Brass and woodwinds sounded so real I felt the performers were in my listening room with me. I can see why Harry Pearson has it on the Absolute Sound's top disc list. A must have!

There were only two times that I heard some defects in the original recording, otherwise this is a great CD. I was very impressed with JVC's 24 bit process--just as good as SACD or DVD-Audio to my ears (too bad the discs are more expensive than most SACD or DVD-A discs). The perfomance is almost flawless--Mehta captures the essence of the Planets and the LAPO plays very well--a nice disc..
