Blue Coast Records Sets a New Standard in Audio Excellence

"…The publicity about this new effort frankly struck me at first as too good to be true. But it's true. I'm waiting with baited breath to hear what they can do with, say, a jazz vocal ensemble, a saxophone quintet, a big band, a chorus, even a symphony!" – John Sunier, Audiophile Audition

"…a remarkable new demonstration disc, Blue Cost Collection: The E.S.E. Sessions (SACD, Blue Coast BCRSA 1012a). Clearly intended to show off the talents of the recording engineers-producers, Cookie Marenco and Jean-Claude Reynaud, The E.S.E. Sessions is a spectacularly natural presentation of acoustic instruments and voices in a rich, defining ambience that envelops the listener…The folky language most of them spoke is not my usual dialect, but it was impossible not to be engaged when the message was so immediate and personal. And don't miss the last track, which features Glen Moore's bowed double bass and a curious whisper." – Kalman Robinson, www.stereophile.com, September 2007

"One of the most natural sounding recordings I’ve ever heard. Very enjoyable."
David Schwartz - FOUNDER OF MIX MAGAZINE

"The sound production is so clear you can drink it from the tap!"
Allen Butler - PRESIDENT, SONY MUSIC NASHVILLE, 1993-2003

Label founder Cookie Marenco, a five-time Grammy nominated producer/engineer, has developed a patented-pending surround sound recording technique called Extended Sound Environment (ESE) that creates a holographic sonic image. ESE makes use of room and direct microphone placement to optimize full tonal response from the instruments and character of the room. Marenco assembled a cast of world-class engineers and technicians noted for their commitment to audio excellence. The disc features the work of 10 acoustic artists of various styles, and each recording used only the highest quality gear, including silver cabling throughout the process. No headphones, digital effects or overdubs were used. And while the musicians are relatively unknown, they are of top caliber and were hand picked for their performance abilities.

Purchased this disc to hear the recording technique, with the aid of the web samples. I was expecting yet another audiophile weenie great sound/lame music. Oh my goodness how sweet it is to be so wrong! Fans of say Leo Kottke, acoustic Jackson Browne, Lyle Lovett, Nickel Creek, order this disc right now. Yes, it’s that good.

Sonically, these guys are really getting there. Played at realistic levels, several times the dobro was right THERE. A guitar right THERE. No etch, no grain even on female vocals. Interestingly, I found lowering the rear levels -2db solidified the soundfield but still had wonderful ambient bloom.

Again, “audiophile” discs like this are a rarity. Recommended just for the cd layer only absent an SACD player!

*Playback system used was Sony XA-9000ES, Rotel RSP-1068 multi pass thru, Bat VK-3i pre. Four channel, (full range), front and rear, transmission line sub used with front channels, equalized .1 sub used below 35hz

If you enjoy a mixture of music styles this is worth looking at. The production quality is some of the best and this will force you to pay attention to hear all the fine details letting you enjoy the music even more. Maybe not on the same level as "The Ultimate Demonstration Disc-Volume 2" it is still a fine addition to one's music collection.

The music is not my type (Girlfriend loves it) and the separation is not exactly to my liking either. It seems as if the music is evenly divided between all the speakers. So whatever speaker you are sitting next to is the dominate source. I find myself leaning forward away from the rear speakers when listening to it. My preference is vocals from center speaker and the instruments separated. Like Knoffler and Depechmode(sp) But with this said, the CD is awesome. The sound is as clear & crisp as I have ever heard! The guitar rifts made me feel justified in the obscene amount of money I have invested in my system so far. No regrets about this purchase. It is a must have in your collection.
