Roy Ayers — Coffy
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack on 140-gram vinyl
Coffy is a soundtrack produced, composed, and arranged by vibes legend Roy Ayers for the blaxploitation film Coffy. It was released in 1973 on Polydor Records and peaked at No. 31 on the jazz albums chart. The 1973 film starring Pam Grier, Coffy was an inventive mix of heavy funk and soul-jazz, with vocal highlights from Dee Dee Bridgewater, perfectly encapsulating Grier's vigilante character. Years later, director Quentin Tarantino, who lists Coffy among his favorite movies, hired Grier for his feature, Jackie Brown. Songs from this soundtrack have been sampled by Nas, Prodigy, Redman, Big K.R.I.T., Casual, and Camp Lo, among others.
