Before they became the kings of breezy, radio-friendly hits ("Hey, Soul Sister," anyone?), Train was a scrappy, earnest band grinding it out in San Francisco, chasing that alternative rock dream. Their self-titled debut album arrived in 1998, and while it didn't set the world on fire overnight, it steadily built momentum, powered by heartfelt songwriting, anthemic melodies, and Pat Monahan's unmistakable vocals.
Train found success by leaning into classic rock influences with a modern twist. It wasn't flashy, it wasn't edgy — it was just real. And sometimes, realness is exactly what people need. "Meet Virginia," the lead single (and the band's breakthrough hit) is a perfect slice of late-'90s alt-rock storytelling. It's quirky, emotional, and features one of the most oddly specific yet compelling lyrics ever: She wears high heels when she exercises. Who is Virginia? We don't know, but we love her.
Among the other tracks on the album, "I Am" is a soaring ballad that showcases Monahan's vocal range and Train's knack for blending introspection with radio-ready hooks. It's the kind of song that makes you stare pensively out a rainy window.
Train is an earnest, heartfelt debut that set the stage for the band's later success. It's got raw emotion, great melodies, and enough grit to stand out in a crowded late-'90s scene.
