The Oscar Peterson Trio with Herb Ellis — Hello Herbie
1970 album reissued on 180-gram LP
AAA remaster from the original master tape by Christoph Stickel
Made in Germany
The reunion of Peterson with his former guitarist Herb Ellis alone makes Hello Herbie a highlight. Together with bassist Ray Brown, they formed one of the best jazz combos of the 50s. This album was recorded at MPS in the Black Forest in 1969 together with then trio members Sam Jones (bass) and Bob Durham (drums).
Hello Herbie captures the essence of jazz in all its brilliance, offering a captivating blend of intricate melodies, masterful improvisation and rhythmic dynamics. From the infectious grooves to the gripping solos, each track is a testament to the unique chemistry that the trio and Herb Ellis have built from the start. It is obvious that Peterson and Ellis were inspired by each other's presence, but the entire line-up with Jones and Durham harmonizes so well that one might think they had been playing together for years.
Hello Herbie convinces with a versatile repertoire that ranges from beloved jazz standards to original compositions, always interpreted with the band's own style. Titles such as "Exactly Like You" and "Hamp's Blues" are prime examples of the incredible harmony of Ellis and Peterson, who constantly surpass themselves with their solos.
Ellis was a legendary guitarist who played with Jimmy Dorsey, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald and other jazz titans. Ellis was a permanent member of Peterson's trio from 1953-58, while it was featuring a guitar but no drums — one of or even the greatest jazz combo of the 1950s.
With Peterson's incredible skill, Ellis thoughtful playing, and a more than solid foundation in Durham and Brown, this album showcases exceptional artists at their very best. Both Ellis and Peterson feed off of each other and the album's fusion of playful interplay, together with nuanced arrangements and combined with the AAA remaster by Grammy-nominated mastering engineer Christoph Stickel, delivers an immersive experience.
The album package includes a scan of the original master tape box and new liner notes by jazz journalist Scott Yanow.
