Country star Ashley McBryde trusts her instincts on The Devil I Know

If the rest of Ashley McBryde's 2023 album The Devil I Know is as raw and revealing as the singles she released, her fans might need to ask for the day off work. The Devil I Know is McBryde's fourth studio album on WMN, after Lindeville from 2022.

McBryde sticks to her vices in the new album, regardless of what the people around her have to say about it, from her mother telling her to go to church or her doctor trying to convince her to give up cigarettes. Everybody's got something to say / About how I gotta change my ways / Well, I got something to say of my own / Hell, there's hell everywhere I go / So I'm sticking with the devil I know, she puts forth in the chorus on the title track. The songs in general feature acoustic-driven verses that lead into rock-leaning choruses.

"We're always hearing something from somebody who thinks they know what's best for us," McBryde explains of the song's meaning in a press release. "Lose weight, your hair's too curly, change this, change that. Things just seem to go better when you trust your own lens to see what's good for you."

"Devil" was preceded by the single "Light on in the Kitchen" that's lit up Top 40 on country radio.

"When I tell someone there's a ‘Light On In The Kitchen' for them, to me it means you're thinking of them, even if they're not coming home that night," the singer shares in a press release. "While writing this, we were all able to look back and remember the women in our lives who comforted us, gave us advice and made sure we knew we had a place to go. Writing this song showed me how necessary that simple comfort had been."
