From the Blue Note 80 Vinyl Reissue Series

Curated by Don Was and Cem Kurosman

Mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes

180-gram LP pressed at Optimal in Germany

A Blue Note perennial from 1960, Hubbard's output for this label is considered perhaps his finest overall and Open Sesame, his very first for the label, may be the best of the lot. Joined by Tina Brooks on tenor, McCoy Tyner at the piano, Sam Jones' bass and drummer Clifford Jarvis, this ol' mother Hubbard blows his trumpet with fire and fury, taking no prisoners.

This Blue Note 80 vinyl edition is all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal in Germany.

I want you to understand that I love this record, but compared to 'Cornbread' (review to follow) it falls just short of 5 stars. The vinyl is flat with no noise, ticks or pops. However, the Tone Poet and MMJ 33 series set a pretty high sonic bar and this just misses that lofty standard. I want to emphasize that this is a really first rate recording and that I will be purchasing more of the BN 80 series in the future.
