Flugelhornist Art Farmer and guitarist Jim Hall had a regular group for a time in the mid-'60s but (except for one occasion) had not played together since, until this 1978 LP. This is an unusual effort for CTI in that it is a quintet set without added horns, strings or keyboards. Farmer and Hall are joined by vibraphonist Mike Mainieri, bassist Michael Moore and drummer Steve Gadd for two standards, the title cut and a jazz adaptation of a piece by Ravel. Since Farmer and Hall have long had very complementary styles (both being lyrical, harmonically advanced and thoughtful in their improvisations), it is little surprise that this set is a complete success.

Music of rare beauty, elegance and panache, at the same time soul- stirring and deeply moving. Just one listen to "A Child is Born" or the "Pavane" should convince one! Reportedly, even Jim Hall, well- known for not wanting to ever listen to his recordings, said that he liked this one. The effortlessness and ease with which the musicians serve up the grooves leaves one speechless. Unreserved five stars for the music. However, the sound (at least on this edition, which is all I have of this recording) is a tad veiled, and I could have done with a little more of higher end tizz and sparkle on Steve Gadd's cymbals. Also, the discs I got have slightly more occasional surface noise than I've been accustomed to recently, especially compared to the stellar pressings from Sterling Sound, but nothing that ever distracts from the music. So, maybe just four stars on the recording/remastering/pressing. Most highly recommended overall, though, simply for the wonderful music.
