"...the sound here? Demo disc quality IMO for timbral accuracy, sound staging, dynamics, you name it but especially for how the trumpets were recorded and how each horn players' distinct tonal and textural personality is so well captured." — Music = 9/11; Sound = 10/11 - Michael Fremer, TrackingAngle.com. Read the entire review here.

For The Alternate Blues, producer Norman Granz set aside his rule against issuing what are variously called in the recording business outtakes, breakdowns, or alternate takes.

The reason was that despite missed cues and procedural problems in the rhythm section, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, and Clark Terry played the blues at a level of passion and expressiveness the equal of the versions originally released on The Trumpet Summit Meets the Oscar Peterson Big 4. In addition, there are four standards not heard in the original album. With Joe Pass, Bobby Durham and Ray Brown.

Mastered by Doug Sax at The Mastering Lab from the original analog master tape. Pressed at Quality Record Pressings for superior sound quality, and housed in a handsome Stoughton Printing tip-on jacket.

I have been avoiding the Pablo releases because I just didn't want to commit to another series of recordings, but reluctantly thought I'd try just one to see what all the fuss was about. What can I say? This is an amazingly good recording and music. Looks like my credit card is going to take a serious hit.

It's safe to say that these Pablo LP's will be among your best sounding records. The fact that the music is so good is a welcome bonus. "The Alternate Blues" is a good place to start with Pablo.

Stelar recording and amazing music. My wife came into the room and said she thought musicians were playing live. Keep in mind there are four versions of the song Alternate Blues along with three other great songs.

This is that wonderful combination of well recorded, well mastered, well pressed LP of top musicians making music and having a great time. The players are all at the top of their game, even though past their prime age wise. The jam session nature of the takes of these blues lets us hear their various approaches to improvisation and their lyrical flair. The recording makes the different tone/timbre of Terry/Hubbard/Gillespie easy to identify (although it does sound like Clark Terry is playing his customary flugelhorn). I was grinning ear to ear listening to this one. Enjoy!!

A Must-Have!

I give this reissue a strong recommendation. It sounds incredible on my Rega P3/Elys 2/NEO power supply. You are transported back to the studio during the original recording sessions. All the musicians are laid out in front of you, with lots of space around them. You can follow the bass line, and the bass sounds highly detailed. The horns jump out from far left and right, with a wide dynamic range. You can hear lots of air when Freddie is blowing, adding to the realism. The pressing was perfectly flat, and nearly dead silent. A must-have!
