A Modern Work of Art!

Posted Monday, January 12, 2026 by CliffC This is so refreshing, a newly released album available on SACD, No waiting 25 years to hear superb modern jazz. Why don't more labels release new music on SACD? Whatever, this album is 5 stars all the way. John is a guitar master and his music is quite varied. I could not find a site to preview this album (not on Qobuz or YouTube anyway) so I didn't really know what to expect. I am NOT disappointed. As a modern jazz fan I can find nothing to say other than listen to this album, it will make you smile, tap your foot and finally get up and dance Better still, the song The Beat Goes On throws in a heaping dollop of Blues Rock to get the energy level up a couple of notches.

This record takes you across many different musical genres, from jazz to fusion to ballad to funk and back again. Just when you think you've already heard the best song on the album, the next scene starts and you realize you were wrong. Yes, I am a huge fan of John McLaughlin, and this record makes me realize why! Impex did a wonderful job with everything...the sound, the pressing, and the awesome album jacket. Bravo!!

Not what I had hoped for

Posted Monday, January 20, 2025 by Anonymous I was very excited for this release, and bought it with the belief that it would be the ultimate sounding version of this classic album! I was wrong. It’s ok, but definitely not great. I compared it against my original US pressing from 1977, and my white label promo pressing from the same year. Both of them easily beat the Impex. What the Impex really lacks is the transparency and extended top end that you get on the original pressings. I understand that the master tapes were brand new in 1977, and that they don’t improve with age. Its unfortunate. Good news is that it isn’t too hard to find an original pressing in good condition.

This one step pressing Of Getz and Gilberto's masterpiece is a religious experience. I own the 33, the 45 and now this one. The 45 RPM version was extraordinary, this one has simply left me without words to adequately describe it, it is simply the best vinyl record ever made. Kudos to Impex Records, a great achievement indeed. Compared to the previous 45....incredible bass, even better soundstage, more transparency, more air, more delicate rendering, more, more, more! I thought the difference would be subtle given the original 45's excellence, it is not! You feel like if you were right in the studio's recording booth all those years ago! Every mouthing of the sax, the ring of the top hat, Astrud softly singing in your ear, it's almost sexual in the most intimate way....WOW

The record stands on its own as an absolutely fantastic jazz recording. I'd describe the music as transitional between bebop and hardbop--if you have the Carmel Jones Tone Poet, it's like that. Carmel plays on this record, as does Dave Peacock (who also played on the Carmel Jones TP) and Shelly Manne. The whole band sounds fantastic as a unit, and individually. Most of these cats aren't quite household names but the playing is nonetheless top- notch. And the recording has high replay value. It’s in heavy rotation (no pun intended) on my system. SQ & pressing: 5/5 stars. This is a 100% analog production mastered by Kevin Gray. It is a $40 1x33rpm that sounds like a $60 2x45. It has a lovely warm analog sound, and the clarity and soundstage are just stunning. The mix & EQ (from the original master tape) are perfect.

Posted Thursday, August 18, 2022 by Ruben Torres The sound is even better than the original Friday night in S. F. Al Dimeola, the less gifted player of the 3, produce the album. He made his usual circus act, and the other two play as good as usual, but somehow it lacks the magic of the first album. Anyways, if you are the kind of listener who thinks that Jazz at the Pawnshop is good jazz, this one in comparation is a masterpiece. 5 stars for the production, 3 stars for the music.

Posted Thursday, September 2, 2021 by Juan This has got to be the most amazing sounding record I've got, it is miles and miles ahead of everything I've got, the quality of the pressing is simply outstanding, plus the printing of the sleeve and the outer record sleeve, which by the way would love to buy aparte for my other records, complete a much better package compared to my MOFI Kind of Blue which came scratched, I now want more impel records.

The TYT offer up a veritable variety of jazz tunes, plus an original Blues composition, played with great emotional depth and maturity. The recording quality is superlative, pure audiophile level, reflective of the high standards now expected from the original Three Blind Mice (TBM) and this Impex Records label. A+++ Buy it before it's gone! Seriously....do it! You need this record to correctly show off your music system.
