Brothers in Arms brought the atmospheric, jazz-rock inclinations of Love Over Gold into a pop setting, resulting in a surprise international best-seller. Of course, the success of Brothers in Arms was helped considerably by the clever computer-animated video for "Money for Nothing" and a sardonic attack on MTV. But what kept the record selling was Knopfler's increased sense of pop songcraft-"Money for Nothing" had an indelible guitar riff, "Walk of Life" is a catchy uptempo boogie variation on "Sultans of Swing," and the melodies of the bluesy "So Far Away" and downtempo Everly Brother-style "Why Worry" were wistful and lovely. Dire Straits had never been so concise or pop-oriented, and it wore well on the album. Though they couldn't maintain that consistency through the rest of the album-only the jazzy "Your Latest Trick" and the flinty "Ride Across the River" make an impact-Brother in Arms remains one of the most focused and accomplished albums and, in its succinct pop sense, it is distinctive within their catalog.

1. So Far Away
2. Money for Nothing
3. Walk of Life
4. Your Latest Trick
5. Why Worry
6. Ride Across The River
7. The Man's Too Strong
8. One World
9. Brother In Arms

Tape Hiss!

I can hear tape hiss! This means no noise reduction - a very good thing. The only thing I could compare this album to was the year 2000 remaster. Well, to put it plainly, I can't listen to the 2000 remaster anymore! This album blows it away. Imagine this picture of me listening to this album: me sitting in my chair mouth agape and foot tapping uncontrollably. Just buy this album.

Brothers In Arms is one of their best records, originally released in full digital, DDD. It has always been a very clean recording. The Brothers in Arms remaster (2000) sounded far too compressed and LOUD. This version is even sweeter than the original. The JVC XRCD format (like Super Bit Mapping 20 bit) sounds incredible. I can't wait to try other titles in this format.
