Known for his passion for music, banjo player and singer Dock Boggs "not only lived through Cumberland's long night but...prevailed over it. He has mastered it and infused its raw spirit and tragic temperament into his old songs," writes Jon Pankake, referring to the region's coal mining heritage, in the liner notes. This album was recorded in 1964 at Boggs' sister's house, and Mike Seeger provides guitar accompaniment.
