Hans-Christoph Rademann - Handel: Saul

The libretto of Saul was written by Charles Jennens, who was educated at Oxford but prevented from gaining his degree because of his political opposition to the legitimacy of the Hanoverian monarchy. Saul was the first collaboration between Handel and Jennens. It was an ideal story for Jennens to explore intellectual and dramatic issues including Kingship, jealousy, conflict within families, and the victory of true religion over obstacles such as sinful disobedience.
