The first Beatles release in 5.1 Surround Sound. Love is an unprecedented approach to the Beatles' catalog, featuring wildly alternative mixes and "mash-ups," the combining of two or more Beatles tunes mixed together for a wholly unique song.

The project came about when Paul and Ringo, along with Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison, approached legendary producer Sir George Martin about making experimental mixes from their master tapes. Actually, Martin says that the concept was born several years before when George Harrison and Guy Laliberte, the founder of Cirque du Soleil, began to explore the possibilities of a collaboration between Cirque du Soleil and the Beatles. Out of that vision, Love was born. Martin and his son, Giles, have created a completely unique soundscape. Says Martin: "My brief was to create a soundscape of around one and a half hour's length using any sound I needed from the original Beatles multi-track recordings. It was an offer one could hardly refuse."

Opinions will no doubt vary as to the validity of these new mixes. Purists may be offended. Those thirsting for new Beatles material may be thrilled. One thing's for certain: Love will be among the most talked about releases in many years.

"This album puts the Beatles back together again, because suddenly there's John and George with me and Ringo," said Paul McCartney. "It's kind of magical."

All you need is LOVE posted on 07/01/2009 5 Stars Reviewer: Michael Hanslip I always thought that Beatles music sounded like they recorded it inside a barrel. Love's new mastering takes them out of the barrel and puts them on a big open stage. Even the CD has this open sound, though not to the extent of the DVD-surround mix. I never get tired of listening to this album.

Dougherty This compilation shows us that (1) the Beatles were musical geniuses, (2) their music is ageless, and (3) Sir George Martin does "magical" homage to them and their music with the aural expansion of 5.1 surround sound. To listen to this disc is an emotionally rewarding experience. It takes you back, time and time again, only in a way that envelopes you totally and in a way you've never experienced The Beatles. If you have a home theater you NEED this recording. My only hope is that they will produce a "Love 2". Now if only the recording industry would realize the potential they have for re-engineering classic rock into multichannel DVD-Audio or SACD (like more Doobie Brothers, Yes, Deep Purple, Moody Blues, etc., etc.) what a wonderful world it would be! Anyway - synopsis - buy this record. You won't be sorry. Period.

The Beatles posted on 03/11/2007 4 Stars This selection doesn't contain any unreleased material, but it's well worth having, whether you're a long time fan or just beginning to discover the Beatles. I only gave it a four because there are no new songs, but the new mix is super good. Surround effects are tremendous. If this is anything like the coming remasters, then we're in for a real treat. I HIGHLY recommend this selection!

Love is what it's all about posted on 02/04/2007 4 Stars Reviewer: Steve Hulse I was a little hesitant purchasing this album. Based on some of the reviews I had read, the music had been altered or morphed into some type of barely recognizable elevator genre. Not so! Yes Love is a soundtrack to a stage production so it has to flow from one track to the next, but the music is pure Beatles and nothing more. If you love the Beatles and enjoy listening to music in multi-channel sound, the only thing you'll be disappointed in is the fact that Abbey Road isn't available in the same format.
