Optimized Transmission Line (OTL) Stylus/Cantilever

Grado's OTL provides an ideal transfer of the signal from point to point, e.g., stylus to cantilever to magnet to coils, etc. This has been achieved by eliminating resonance at each of these key junctions. The transmission line cantilever consists of separate sections that are telescoped into each other. All sections are made of different alloys, some sections hollow, other sections solid. These sections are bonded together with materials that act as dampers, and are coated with a black proprietary material which controls and absorbs resonances that travel on the surface of the cantilever (known as skin effects). The OTL stylus/cantilever design will make your records sound quieter, improve the height, width, and depth of the soundstage, and offer more detail than previously obtainable. Cartridge Holography does exist...and that is what Grado's OTL technology is all about, more performance

Pivoted Fixed Axial Cantilever Stylus-Generator

This design feature is basically quite simple. The "OTL" cantilever shaft is brought to a fixed axial pivot that supports the entire cantilever assembly. A miniature element attached to the end of the cantilever is allowed to move freely within the lines of flux of a stationary magnet and coil structure.

This system of support is mechanically more accurate (more linear) than conventional "teeter-totter" designs that utilize an iron armature to balance the mass of the cantilever. The teeter-totter design is supported in the center with a rubber donut mounting.

The fixed axial design has a very low tip mass, which results in lower distortion, improved transient response, and longer record life.

I have five Grado phono carts I purchased used Then bought new stylus's. What great sound and performance. I have Tektronix, HP, B&K, UREI, and more test equipment that I used to verify what I heard. They measure just like the test results stated. Replacing the stylus brought back to NEW performance! You have to be careful when replacing but it is easy. I removed & replaced the stylus 5 or 6 times using the broken stylus to get a feel for how to do it first. Then all went well. Replacing the stylus can't hurt the cartridge.

Dead and made my cartridge die

Purchased the Gold stylus for my Signature 8MR that was working fine but lacked the highs of a nimble new stylus. Spent the $100 for the Gold on recommendations by Grado and The Needle Doctor. I very carefully changed the stylus and powered up my AR ES1, Anthem preamp, YBA Pasiion 300 and JMLabs Alto Utopia Be's. Dead. Dead. Dead. I replaced the old stylus. Still dead. I took it to The Analog Room in San Jose. Conclusion: Open coil. Dead. Now, I understand that stylus' are not returnable and it is anyone's guess if the stylus was the cause of the cartridge death or not. The bottom line is that I had to buy a new cartridge after I spent the $100 for a new stylus.

Draw your own conclusions.

By the way, I upgraded to a $850 Sheler 501 moving coil that totally rocks.

It would be nice to get a refund on the stylus, but I'm not holding my breath.
