Sara K. is in a class all her own. This singer is gifted with the rare ability of having an emotional grasp of the listener by virtue of her spontaneous and intensive aura that casts a spell on the listener. All her records have received several high-caliber awards, including a number of jazz awards. Supported by Stockfisch technology, musically accompanied by renowned musicians, a singer/songwriter extraordinaire is on her way between folk and blues, between Joni Mitchell and Janis Joplin. Great music and great sound: Hell or High Water is both.

I've loved Sara K for years, having bought most of her Chesky recordings. This disc, from Stockfisch, is different from the more spartan Chesky issues, in that it makes use of overdubbing and multitracking. Günter Pauler, of Pauler Acoustics, produced and recorded the music, and it is simply gorgeous. The sound quality is stunning. If you want to hear what the state of the recording art sounds like, this is it.
Sara's voice has never sounded better. It's like fine, aged cognac. Every instrument retains its own unique character, from Ms. K's dusky custom four string guitar, to the late Chris Jones' silky six, and Hrolfer Vagnsson's haunting accordion on Ship in a Bottle.
Most importantly, the music itself marvelous. This is one of Sara's best collections of songs ever. I especially love Curtain Calls, and the compelling Streetlight's On, but each song is a gem. If you're like me, you'll play the disc over and over, finding something new to love about it each time.
