Phoebe Bridgers — Lost Weekend
The long-awaited next chapter from one of contemporary music's defining voices!
When Phoebe Bridgers released her lauded debut, Stranger in the Alps, just a month after her 23rd birthday, critics and fans alike were floored by her wise-beyond-her-years virtuosity. Her 2020 multi-Grammy-nominated follow-up, Punisher, proved to be a resounding promise made good — a clever, alluring, and thrillingly measured masterpiece where her meteoric songwriting talent was finally met by richer, more daring band arrangements.
Now comes Lost Weekend, Bridgers' first solo effort since Punisher landed at the peak of the pandemic, and it stands as her most remarkable achievement yet.
In the time since her last solo record, the Pasadena-born singer-songwriter has operated at an astonishing clip. She dominated the 66th Annual Grammy Awards as the evening's most-awarded artist, taking home four trophies — three with her supergroup boygenius (including Best Alternative Music Album for the record and Best Rock Song for "Not Strong Enough") and a fourth alongside SZA for their collaboration "Ghost in the Machine." Between high-profile stints opening Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour, selling out three legs of her own international Reunion Tour, delivering iconic TV performances on SNL and NPR's Tiny Desk, and collaborating with the likes of Paul McCartney, The National, Lorde, Bright Eyes, and The 1975, Bridgers has quietly been refining her craft at the highest level.
Lost Weekend features contributions from such artists as Alex G, Jack Antonoff, her boygenius bandmates Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, Bo Burnham, Christian Lee Hutson, Caroline Shaw, and Chris Thile.
NME says Lost Weekend is the opposite of emotional evasion: "Bridgers bleeds her pen dry over lush orchestration, reckoning with herself" as she vividly shares tales of romantic and familial love and loss that shapes her storytelling. (5 Stars). Variety says Lost Weekend is alternatively "spooky, hilarious, mysterious and sneakily moving. Maybe it goes without saying: it's not to be missed."
Bridgers is at the height of her powers here; a master, taking nothing more seriously than this craft, refining many of the motifs that distinguished her work previously on this new album that's otherwise, everywhere, full of surprises. Black vinyl double LP with three sides of music; LP2 Side B left blank.
