Thanks to his solo on Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are," Phil Woods has a place in the hearts of millions who don't even know his name. Jazz heads, however, have known and revered Woods since he was first hailed as "the next Bird." A veteran of Dizzy, Monk, Quincy Jones, and Oliver Nelson's bands, by the time he stepped into the studio to lay down his Rites Of Swing, Woods was in full control of his art and his newly minted octet of top players.

A tight, easy-to-dig set of hard bop with the sophistication of swing and subtle classical touches, Rites Of Swing is finally reissued in a fashion befitting its legacy, with restored artwork and remastering by Bernie Grudman from the original session tapes.
