LP from ECM's Luminessence Series

Trumpeter/flugelhornist Kenny Wheeler' debut album for ECM

Gnu High was trumpeter/flugelhornist Kenny Wheeler's first for ECM, and Keith Jarrett's last session as a sideman: both deliver astonishing improvisations in a highly interactive quartet with Holland and DeJohnette, and Wheeler's writing is captivating.

Recorded June 1975, at Generation Sound Studios, New York.

Luminessence, ECM's new audiophile vinyl-reissue series, is a kaleidoscope, shedding light on the jewels of the label's deep catalog in elegant, high-quality editions. The hallmarks of the series: original and evocative music, imaginatively played and sensitively produced. The recordings underline the scope and variety of ECM's world of sound and the LPs are presented in different formats.

Some are offered in exclusive facsimile editions, others framed in high-grade gatefolds that include new liner notes offering historical context and fresh perspectives, while again others have been long out of print or even never before released on vinyl. Many of the re-issues are cut from the original analog master tapes and all Luminessence releases incorporate the striking cover art which has contributed to ECM's renown.

Musicians:
Kenny Wheeler, flugelhorn
Keith Jarrett, piano
Dave Holland, double-bass
Jack DeJohnette, drums

Wow. ECM really kicked off their new series well with this set from 1975. The pressing is so clean - not a pop nor a tic. The sound has great instrument separation and a three dimensionality. It's a gas to hear these four legends bouncing off each others ideas, carrying on a exploratory musical dialogue. The packaging is uniquely first rate - the vinyl is not packed inside the sleeve, but rather in the center of the gatefold. I've gotten plenty of used lps this way but this is a first for a new record from the factory. I like it! I'm hoping this sets a trend. I will definitely be keeping my ear tuned to this series.
