Journey - Freedom

Journey's first album in more than a decade!

Journey returns with its first album since 2011's Eclipse. Guitarist Neal Schon, keyboardist Jonathan Cain and singer Arnel Pineda are joined on the record by bassist Randy Jackson, who also played on Journey's 1986 album Raised on Radio.

"During the pandemic, there wasn't much to do," Schon said in a press release. "I spent a lot of time in my little studio at home, learning how to play keyboards and looping. Some of those ideas ended up being songs. So it kind of came out of nowhere."

Schon said that song "came out of one of the many loops I'd written while the long downtime continued with the pandemic we all had to deal with. ... I laid down the keyboard loop with overdubbed rhythm and a little blues lead guitar and sent it to Jonathan. He sent it back very shortly after with demo vocals and lyrics, and I said to myself with a smile, 'We've still got it!'"

Freedom is also the name of Journey's current North American tour, which launched in February. Toto are providing support for the entire trek. Toto were originally scheduled to split opening duties with Billy Idol, but he had to bow out of the tour to receive sinus surgery.
