Nearly 60 years after they first played together, Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal, longtime friends and collaborators, reunite with an album of music from two Piedmont blues masters who have inspired them all their lives: Get On Board: The Songs Of Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, on Nonesuch Records.
With Taj Mahal on vocals, harmonica, guitar, and piano and Cooder on vocals, guitar, mandolin, and banjo — joined by Joachim Cooder on drums and bass — the duo recorded 11 songs drawn from recordings and live performances by Terry and McGhee, who they both first heard as teenagers in California.
"The music feels intimate and lived in, the sound of two old friends jamming away in a small room," says Rolling Stone in a four-star review. "But because they also want to romp things up, what could have been a tasteful salute becomes a record that's bristlingly, viscerally alive."
"A record that acts as both a good-humour history lesson and a rousing party-starter for future generations to discover," says Uncut. "Mahal and Cooder are giving back here like so often before," says Mojo. "As they revive and curate earthy, animated songs by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, there is clearly love in the room."
Guitarist gives the album a perfect 10/10, exclaiming: "It's been an unbelievable 60 years since Cooder and Mahal last teamed up, and their reunion is a glorious one." Record Collector says: "Showing everyone else what a proper reunion looks like. Rough-hewn and life-affirming. The two are clearly having a helluva time and their enthusiasm is infectious." PopMatters says: "A happy time is what Mahal and Cooder deliver. On every track on Get on Board, what comes through is their pleasure in playing these songs they learned from and still love."
