Toto's Fahrenheit, released in August 1986, fell into an emerging trend — even as it marked the debut of frontman Joseph Williams. An album of varied musical goals and textures was reduced to its singles, both of them Top 40 ballads.
The singles "I'll Be Over You" streaked to No. 11 and "Without Your Love" went to No. 38.
Fahrenheit was a return to form for Toto, with Williams a perfect fit for the band, even if the album's best track, hit ballad "I'll Be Over You," was sung by guitarist Steve Lukather, with Michael McDonald on back-ups. Former lead singer Fergie Frederiksen was fired due to problems with his ability in the studio. However, he sings backing vocals on the song "Could This Be Love." It was also the last Toto album until Toto XIV in 2015 to feature keyboardist Steve Porcaro as a permanent member, as he left after the Fahrenheit tour.
