Over his long and distinguished career, Sonny Rollins has made many dozens of albums. Among those recorded during the 50's, Prestige's Movin's Out and Saxophone Colossus, Blue Note's A Night at the Village Vanguard, Riverside's The Sound of Sonny, and Way Out West on Contemporary qualify as all-time Rollins classics. The session for Way Out West, Rollins' first ever in California, was called for 3 a.m. to accommodate everyone's busy schedules. Sonny, who could never be accused of overstatement, announced after four hours of recording: "I'm Hot Now".

Recorded in 1957.

Sonny Rollins, saxophone (tenor)
Ray Brown, bass
Shelly Manne, drums

The sound quality on this album is off the charts. Super silent RTI pressing too! This is a winner, and if it's not an analogue cut I would be extremely surprised, it's that good!

Heck of a pressing - great music, great value

Had a problem getting this one flat, first one was ridiculously warped, second was great. Very quiet, great pressing, and the music is very good. Sonny is new to me so this was a great record to spin me further down the Jazz rabbit hole. It’s not busy, laid back and smooth. Did I mention a flat and quiet pressing? A real unicorn these days.

Good quality music and recording

Although I do not have another copy of this to compare. This is a fine recording for the price. The vinyl is very quiet. I will buy more OJC releases.

Better than sax!!!

Great jazz, sonics, and very quiet vinyl. If you're into sax, drums, and bass, buy it. At this price you won't be disappointed.

Can't believe I only paid $22 or so for this LP! Terrific sound quality, dynamics, and pretty darn quiet. Highly recommended! I just wish it was mixed with the sax in the center but maybe that comes with the big bucks remixes that are reselling for well over $200.

WOW, does this sound good

The sax just leaps out of the speaker. The music speaks for itself, I needn't review that here. What a great pressing.
