Beautiful sound and now improved packaging.

This is a fantastic sounding disc given the age of the recording. Beauiful sounding solo instruements and the group arrangements really sing.

My original review reads as follows:

"I felt I had to deduct a star as the overall package is thin on information. Titles, composers, vocal credit to "Yvonne" but no other musician credits. Date of album recording, but not recording of bonus tracks. No recording venue stated. No explanatory notes of this albums place in Jazz history, no detail on the modern clean up and mastering."

To my surprise, a few months later Analogue Productions sent me an email asking. "If we sent you an improved set of packaging, would you re-review it?"

Wow, yes please.

The new insert includes the full band line up for each piece, more accurate recording session details and an impressive essay on the history of each piece in the years between composition in the 1930s onwards up to the 1950/51 LP recordings.

Excellent work. Fifth star well earned.

Excellent alternative to the stereo mix

Less reverb than the notorious "swimming pool" stereo version, and Jack's bass comes off more clearly, proving he was the rock foundation of the band. In the quieter moments, you can appreciate more the wistfulness and uniqueness of this classic San Francisco band, undiluted by the stereo shenanigans of Marty and Grace's voices coming from dueling speakers (although there is something to be said for that, as well!). Seems a waste that MoFi is finally putting out JA SACDs and not using the 4.0 multichannel mixes that exist, but I'll be happy enough if they follow up with Baxter's and Crown on SACD!

John Coltrane - Lush Life Hybrid SACD MONO

I will preface all my jazz reviews that I am a newcomer to jazz and easily impressed. I am having great fun with these 2014 AP Prestige series discs. John Coltrane does not disappoint. I immediately got to know him on the opening track, Like Someone in Love, as his sax is very prominent with a subtle bass groove and even more subtle drums with brushes. Tracks 1,2,3 are a trio and tracks 4&5 a quartet with added piano. The mono is superb, I want to say very well balanced but it is mono so I will just say great clarity, depth, good bass, and lovely to listen to. Packaging is heavy cardboard gate fold with liner notes by Joe Goldberg. Very glad to have this 2014 reissue of a great 1957 recording.

Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus Hybrid SACD Mono 2014

As I continue into my jazz listening experimentation, again I am not dissapointed. A 1956 mono recording brought to life in this 2014 reissue. This performance was a sleepy, calming trip for me, leaving me very relaxed and in a good mood. The AP mono reissue was stunning to my baby ears as I have nothing to compare it to. I loved the drumming by Max Roach and the smooth saxophone, strong piano, and great bass. When I listened I could really feel the vibe of the recording studio and the way they had to record, less mics, very quiet, everybody at total professionalism to do there part. Colossus is an understatement.

Loved it. This music was from before my time. A 1957 mono recording reproduced exceptionally well on this hybrid SACD disc. I am not an expert in jazz and am just picking up discs here and there. I am really thrilled with this recording both by performance and the pure sonic beauty of this reissue. I have purchased a few others from the Analogue Productions Prestige Series and am looking forward to more listening. Sonny Rollins is great.

Not a Great Advert for Hybrid SACD

Now don't get me wrong, I'm a real Fan of Audio Fidelity and their latest batch of Hybrid SACDs and for the most part the ones I have are all pretty much near Reference quality.....but this Elvis disc is a stinker from start to finish I'm afraid - poor resolution, muddy sound, poor seperation of the vocals...etc. etc. - if you really want to hear this album at it's best either purchase (or keep hold of) the Sony Legacy release from the late 90's...play them 'A to B' aginst each other and if you didn't know any better you'd expect the Sony release to be the freshly minted disc.....oh well, never mind!

Harry Belafonte's

This is the first time hearing Harry Belafonte's "Calypso" without loud pops, surface noise from ground in dirt, crackle, inner-groove distortion, and groove damage at loud peaks caused by those clunky medievil 1950's hi-fi tonearms that double as phonograph record torture devices. Halfway though the third track, all I kept saying to myself is "wow!" No surface noise or distortion, I can hear fingers sliding on the guitar strings and a ride cymbal, this disc is amazing.

The SACD sounds better than my 2S/1S LP, and it doesn't have the audio problems of the 57 year old wax. This disc sounds more open and sweeter than the 2S vinyl and a 1956 Japanese Victor LP I own. When I found the Japanese LP, I was expecting a sonic miracle but the Japanese LP is pretty noisy and sounds a few tape generations down from the original tape.

The two LP's are now heading to Goodwill.

The SACD is the sonic miracle I was waiting for. Thanks to Kevin Gray for a great mastering job, and to Audio Fidelity for putting out this wonderful disc.

Wonderful recording, occasionally rough players

The sonics of this SACD are extremely good, and as my wife said, it sounds like there's a band in the room with you. The band misses a step or beat or cue, here and there -- I don't think they were fully used to playing with one another. The recording quality is absolutely wonderful, and it is way cool to think that it is mono. This is some straight-up (occasionally rough) straight-ahead jazz. Very real sounding, both in terms of the excellent SACD pressing and the musicians.

Short and sweet, I will be buying the complete set. The mono recording is so clear, it really sounds like a live concert. I am running this direct DSD through an Oppo BDP 83 SE, but the non SACD layer is also excellent. It is amazing what modern technology can do for these master tapes. As an audiophile and jazz lover, I really appreciate that Analogue Productions is reproducing these classics for lucky listeners.

This is really an amazing remaster & transfer. When can MONO actually sound better than stereo? When it transports you back to then & there. A pleasure & feel most privileged to be able to appreciate their amazing talent the way they intended it to be.

BRAVO, INDISPENSABLE!!! Nat "King" Cole, with his trio and distinguished guest artists, in MONO, with sound that continues the outstanding sonics of this incredible series.

Nat Cole was about to turn the corner into the singing career that made him famous when he brought his trio into Capitol records in 1956 and made these recordings. The man had an uncanny ability to comp (jazz lingo for piano accompaniment) while singing. His solos are virtuosic, pared down to essentials, just like vintage Count Basie, and the band is so tight, they fit like a tailored suit. The contributions from the assembled instrumental soloists are lovely.

I hear more color in his vocals than I have EVER heard in ANY issues of these recordings, and I own all of them. Even in mono, this sounds like the trio is sitting in my living room.

PLEASE, BUY THIS, LOVE IT, and SUPPORT THE OUTSTANDING AUDIO RESTORATION OF THESE INCREDIBLE RECORDINGS!!!!!
