Tom Petty's New Side Project!

"I just finished a record with Mudcrutch, my old band before the Heartbreakers. I am over the moon about it. I couldn't have hoped for it to be as good as it came out." – Tom Petty

Tom Petty and his childhood buddy Tom Leadon go back a long ways in bands together. They initially were in a Gainsville, Florida band called the Epics before forming Mudcrutch along with Mike Campbell and Randall Marsh. This was all before the Heartbreakers, obviously. Well now, more than 30 years later, Mudcrutch is back together and includes Hearbreaker Benmont Tench. The group recorded 18 old and new songs, 14 of which made this self-titled release.

1.   Shady Grove
2.   Scare Easy
3.   Orphan Of The Storm
4.   Six Days On The Road
5.   Crystal River
6.   Oh Maria
7.   This Is A Good Street
8.   The Wrong Thing To Do
9.   Queen Of The Go-Go Girls
10.   June Apple
11.   Lover Of The Bayou
12.   Topanga Cowgirl
13.   Bootleg Flyer
14.   House Of Stone

I like Tom Petty but a little goes a long way. This is a fun record and the sound is surprisingly good. It sounds less "California" and more Americana if that makes any sense. Funny to think that Don Felder of the Eagles gave guitar lessons to little Tommy Petty when Felder was in his early teens.

Greetings

Tom Petty is a AOR music icon. he's had countless timeless records along with the Heartbreakers as well as a solo artist. I think this album is quite excellent & offers alot of moods & other emotional landscapes. i dig music that isn't afraid to experiment with the colours of the sound. Crystal River is my favourite song on the album. it is quite the extended jam, it swirls in an organic fashion like consistent psychedelica does. you might think it is all guitars but listen again. there is a whole dream waiting to be revealed. Mudcrutch should be heard on the vinyl format. the musical textures are quite revealing,

Best of Petty and Co.

Arguably the best record of Petty’s long career and it goes right back to his major influences. Early swamp rock, rockabilly and the type of music played at an all-night summer party. Great recording, quiet vinyl and dynamic sonics. If you don’t have it, don’t miss it now!

Excellent recording!

This is an incredible sounding record! The quality of this pressing is one of the best I've heard, and Tom Petty and bandmates really show off their talent. This package comes with a bonus, non-compressed CD version of the album. If you're a fan of Petty, I recommend it.

Excellent. Surprising. I need more...

Wow! Someone had mentioned online that they had heard this early and that it was an excellent performance and recording. I heard just a bit on Amazon and decided to preorder the LP. I now have it and I am absolutely impressed with both the recording and the performance. Where did these guys come from!!! Tom Petty is as good as he's ever been, and this new (old) band is top notch. They are simply fantastic. I'm off to listen to it again. Easily a no brainer purchase if you like rock and roll, blues, and southern rock. We need more of these type of new releases.
