Great performance but...

Posted Friday, September 8, 2023 by Mike Love this, and can understand the TAS grading but at least on my record there is a distorted/compressed sound in passages when the keys are a bit more forcefully hit.

Posted Monday, January 31, 2022 by Anonymous Was nervous buying all these re-releases of Mercury living presence titles for the price… but… sounds amazing!!! What a great release. Guess it shows when people put the work in the results pay off to a timeless collectors version.

Posted Tuesday, July 28, 2020 by Anthony Interpretations are excellent with Jean Martinon leading LSO. I especially loved Rimsky Korsakoff's Capriccio Espagnole. The recording is excellent and very quiet. Definitely worth purchasing.

Posted Saturday, April 25, 2020 by Anonymous This is a heroic performance from Heifetz, it may be somewhat overlooked because of the repertoire but the sound and performance are every bit as impressive as his Sibelius or Brahms concerto.

Gary Graffman - The Virtuoso Liszt Product No: AAPC 2443

Great piano disc

5 Stars
Posted Wednesday, April 8, 2020 by EricL Graffman’s treatment of Liszt’s pieces are extremely well played. The sound here is some of the best piano sound that RCA produced. I wish the Rubinstein discs were this good. The piano truly seems like it’s in the room. Highly recommended.

Great new reissue

5 Stars
Posted Saturday, September 15, 2018 by EricL Analogue Productions has just released this 1959 recording with Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, one of the LS discs never issued by Classic Records. In terms of string tone, this was lauded as one of the top Living Stereos. As usual, the performance with Munch leading the BSO is wonderfully refined with very warm sound. AP did a superb job here mastered at Sterling. I don't have an original to compare, but I can't imagine it could be much better. The pressing is perfect, flat, centered and quiet with no ticks or pops on my copy. I think AP is running a streak here. Also the thick cardboard tip-on cover is beautifully reproduced and quite striking. Jonathan Valin's entry in the Living Stereo catalogue comments about a "weakish bass"on the original, but perhaps the reissue has improved things for I thought it was quite adequate. The Socerer's Apprentice on side one is perhaps the highlight though Ravel's Mother Goose suite on side one is also wonderful.

Stunning!

5 Stars
Posted Monday, January 5, 2015 by Jeff I have almost all the Living stereo releases from Classic Records, and they all sound very good. But after getting one of these new issues when they first came out, I've started collecting the AP copies of them, because they are simply amazing! I honestly didn't think, given the age of the masters, that these could sound much better than what Classic got out of them, but I was wrong. This one is particularly stunning. The orchestra is so clear and radiant, and the organ doesn't overpower when it comes in. And when the organ is playing the very low pedal notes (like the beginning of the 3rd mvmt), the room actually rumbles. The low C in the pedal SOUNDS like a 32' pipe, and not like a 16' on the other issues. If you haven't invested in any of these AP Living Stereo records, you owe it to yourself to get some and hear the difference.

Not Quite A Shaded Dog...But Very Close!

Posted Thursday, December 18, 2014 by Carl E. Baugher With only a very slight amount of steely string tone when compared to an original SD, this reissue is simply superb in every meaningful area -- soundstage, frequency range, timbre, dynamics and coherency. The surfaces are impeccable, too. Worth every penny of the asking price and then some, I'd say. If you missed out on the Classic Records reissues (has it really been over twenty years?), fear not. These are every bit as good judging by this one. I'm simply bowled over and yes, I will be acquiring more from this series!

Another brilliant RR release

5 Stars
Posted Thursday, January 30, 2014 by Jonathan I have waited decades for a recorded performance of Belkis with true, audiophile pretensions. The only other LP I have heard of this work was an early era digital Chandos release from the 80s, but this new RR release was well worth the wait. This new RR LP release retains all the hallmarks of this label - a monumental dynamic range and as true a depiction of true concert hall sound and perspective as possible. This recording in particular will torture even the most esoteric LP playback chains to the limit, since apart from anything else there is quite simply no option other than to have the playback level set to emulate the same sound pressure levels as heard at a live performance - such is the extreme dynamic range inherent in these two Respighi works. So far as the Belkis work is concerned, if you are unfamiliar with it, I am not sure what will astonish you more - the fact that it is so seldom heard or performed, or the excellence of both the performance itself and the recording.
