Roland Kirk — The Inflated Tear
180-gram vinyl LP reissued by Speakers Corner
The Inflated Tear is considered one of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's most personal and emotional works. Recorded after a severe stroke of fate, the album combines deep pain with overwhelming creativity. Kirk lets his instruments — often several at the same time — wail, sing and rejoice, while he fuses jazz, blues and soul into an intense, almost spiritual arc of sound. The result is an album full of expressiveness that shows how powerful music can be as an outlet and narrative form: raw, poetic and deeply human.
For his 1967 debut session with Atlantic Records after a long and fruitful association with Mercury, legendary multi-instrumentalist Kirk wasted no time in establishing himself at his new home — three of the album's songs are among Kirk's all-time classics. Backed by a nimble trio led by longtime associate Ron Burton on piano, Kirk is as unpredictably brilliant in a variety of genres on a variety of instruments as ever.
