Protest rock finds a new torchbearer in N.Y.C. trio
"The Last Internationale brings back some of the magic of 60's folk protest music, but not as a repeat: Instead, it is more of a re-interpretation." — The Eastern Echo
Founded by New York City natives Delila Paz and Edgey Pires, The Last Internationale quickly forged a reputation for poetic, socially conscious songs and explosive live performances. Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), who is the executive producer of the band's debut album, noted, "The Last Internationale is one of my favorites in the next wave of rebel rockers. They're raw and real and mix East Village rock sensibilities with Battleship Potemkin firepower."
Over Thanksgiving dinner at Morello's home, talk turned to the duo's need for a drummer. Morello suggested they talk with Brad Wilk (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave), and got Brad on the phone. After hearing the material and bonding with Paz and Pires, Wilk signed on. The Last Internationale's debut album — produced by Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Neil Young) is We Will Reign includes the first single "Life, Liberty and The Pursuit of Indian Blood."
The N.Y.C. trio makes the kind of rip-roaring, blues-ingratiated rock 'n' roll that helped cement the fate of acts like The Black Keys and The Kills but with an undeniably outspoken twist. Lyrics pull direct inspiration from our nation's rocky international affairs but are delivered in Paz's wholly personal voice, a ferocious mix of sultry and full-bodied powerhouse that only helps drive her points home. Her clear and dramatic voice, infused with passion, is too strong to ignore, which makes the point of her songs much easier to convey.
